You have a pistol or AR. You have a kid in the house. How do you secure your weapon and still make it viable for home defense?

Fuck the AR, lock that useless piece of crap up in a safe. Get a small lockbox or in-the-wall safe for the handgun and hang a picture over it or mount it somewhere secure.

I typically keep my safe locked fully at all times, but when I go to bed I will unlock it and pull the bolts but leave the door closed. This way if I need to quickly get access to a firearm I can simply pull open the door rather than fumbling with the keypad.

You can also buy the small safes that have a quick access mode (IIRC)

Use a hand print activated pistol safe. You can keep it next to your bed within arm's reach. it can stay there. No one can open it without the correct hand print, either you or your wife or whoever. An enemy cannot access it. Your kid cannot access it, but you can access it instantly. Also, with the adrenaline flowing, you are likely to forget any safe combination or keypad buttons and will render you defenseless. You can't forget your hand print.

I really like this solution within reason. There is a period in each child's life where they don't make good decisions and during that time you can't trust, train, teach or scare them into doing the right thing 100% of the time. Only a parent will know when their children are beyond that point, but because the consequences for failure are so high, you have to have some kind of lock or safe for your firearms until then.

An additional consideration is how does an older child, maybe 14+, protect themselves if they happen to be home alone and something happens? Do you give them access to a firearm you've taught them to safely use? Of course you teach them to lock doors, who to open for and who not to, and other safety measures.

My daughter is 17 and knows if the SHTF to call 911 on her cell phones and run out the back door if possible. She also know where a loaded 9mm pistol is and how to use it if she has no other option.

You don’t want anything electronic between you and your weapon. Especially a biometric device. Does your smartphone unlock EVERYTIME you use your finger?
