The 5.7 is an interesting round...have you seen the new caliber from RIA that closely resembles it?

They sell a 1911 pistol chambered in it that comes with a replacement 9mm barrel so you can fire both calibers

That will give the most die hard gun slingers a erection. Armor piercing fuck yeeeeeeeah!

These two are far more important than bullet weight, +p, +p+, etc. If your gun won't function with it, or you can't hit with it, it is not what you want to use for self defense. I would much rather hit someone with an "inferior" round (or rounds) than miss entirely or have to clear a malfunction.

Well the inferior cheap stuff is the shit that failed normally unless you invest in a six shooter. Then you just pull the trigger again

I've read that the smaller bullets (115 gr or 124 gr.) are better because of higher velocity allowing greater penetration, but I've no testing or proof on that.

Federal HST 147.

Make sure you practice/train with your defense rounds as well. They feel different and you want to make sure your gun reliably fires/cycles them.

if you’re faced with a choice between Federal HST or Winchester Ranger then just pick whichever box has a cooler logo because both bullets are going to do exactly the same thing when you shoot them at stuff.

these were shot out of a 4 inch barrel into 16 inches of wet newspaper, the 124 gold dot and golden sabers performed very close, penetration was 15 in. on both.the 115+p+ gold dot made it 12 in. and the federal went 10 in.but the jacket separated 3 inches in.I carry the 115+p+ gold dots in the summer and the 124+p gold dots in the winter.Of the 3 you listed i would carry the golden sabers but my gun is more accurate with hotter rounds

If you carry 147gr shoot 147gr as the weight of the bullet impacts the recoil considerably.

I would go with 124gr +p jhp, 9mm is not meant to be a big slow round like .45acp or 40s&w and 124gr seems like a good compromise between speed, power, and practicality of using the same weight range ammo.

bjhp is basically a marketing gimmick it is still a copper jacketed hollow point, who cares if they electroplate the copper on the bullet or not.

so a 115gr +p+ has less recoil than a slower 147gr?

if so then why?
force = mass x velocity

both bullets have approx the same amount of force, no?

A bullet on paper is a lot different than a bullet coming out of a gun.

Barrel length and other factors can ultimately change what you 'get'.

There are a lot of write ups on the 'best 9mm self defense' ammo.

Also many guns out there cannot handle +p even reliably.

It's sort of like the overclocking debate with people betting it will work a 'while' prior to being a problem. The thing is you don't want your gun to BSOD when you really need it the first time.

I don't care for 147gr loads in 9mm, and sometimes I wonder if +Ps extra velocity is worth the added stress to the weapon. In a subcompact with a 3" barrel I don't feel it is.
Having said that I think Corbon makes a fantastic product with their 90gr and 100gr Pow'R'Balls, quite impressive.

Hornady's Critical Defense in 115gr currently lives in my carry piece now, but I've used Speer Gold Dots and Rem Gold Sabers in the past with no issues.

It really comes down to what the intended gun likes, and how well you can shoot it. There is no one perfect load, but sticking with brand name loads explicitly made for self-defense is a good place to start. If I had to pick one on the poll I'd go with the Gold Saber.

Well, every gun's rated for a few rounds of +p...
