How much do monthly memberships run on average?

Right now, I have access to the CoRec (on campus sports facility) free of charge, but am getting fed up going there.

Not sure if Purdue is anything lilke U of Iowa, but here you have two levels of fitness centers available. The free one with run down crappy equipment that's always packed, or the second fitness center that costs $60 a semester to use. It's the one that athletes have access to and has the latest and greatest equipment and a huge amount of cardio machines.

Nope, we only have one massive center. Includes all the equipment, indoor pool, basketball courts, indoor soccer/hockey, racquetball, wallyball, etc.

The equipment is decent, but the place is always crowded. Plus I am tired of watching the Greek Monkies try to out do each other.

The place I go to is 29.99 a month. However, it offers a student membership, so I pay 21.99 a month. Some places will give you breaks if you pay in advance (i'd only do that if I knew the place was reputable, or is in good financial standing). Before you commit, make sure you look around the gym and see what shape the place is in, and the equipment. There is a gym here that charges $100 a year, but the equipment is in terrible shape, and is over 10 years old.

So..see what places offer a student discount.

The range is staggering. Nothing is standardized. You could talk to five different people at one gym on the same day and every one will be paying something different. I got on my parent's account at the local Gold's Gym in 1997 for $11 per month. I'm now 21. There is no way I can justify dropping that account because I would never be able to get another membership at that price. My sister just tried to get a secondary membership on the same account and they quoted $25/month for three years and $19/month after that.

Many places will bait you with very low <$10/month fees, but will front-load the contract with a huge signing fee.

All gyms get crowded. If it bothers you so much, think about changing your work-out time. I don't like crowds and waiting for equipment either. I go to my campus gym at 7:30 am. I doubt your campus gym is crowded at that time of the day. When I'm not at school, I avoid going to Bally's between 5-8 pm. If you are so particular, maybe you should consider changing YOUR schedule to fit your needs. I seriously doubt you'll be any happier at another gym...and you'll be paying for it.

I am at work before the gym opens. By the time I am able to get to the campus sports center, it is packed. I guess this is what happens when you have 40000+ undergrads as well as all staff who can use it free of charge.

We pay $60/mo here, but it's a pretty nice place. Overall worth it as it offers classes that Kate is interested in, and has great facilities for me to train for Ultimate.

Maybe it would be worth it to you then. I'd recommend scoping out the places you're considering during the time that you'd normally be working out to see how crowded it gets.

I remember going to the co-rec. They renovated the whole place right after I graduated. That sucks.

One of my friends got a membership to NewTone and it was somewhere around $500 for a year. He wanted me to join with him, but $500 was way too much considering Subaru has a rec center that employees can use free of charge.

Just to give you more numbers for comparison, I paid $1000 for 3 years at Golds in Redondo Beach, CA. Renewals after that will be 199 per year.
