The day I've been preparing for for 3 months is here.

The 26.2mi run, a potent test of human endurance. Should be fun.

Incidentally, this is the last long run I'll be able to do for a while. I'm going in for LASIK next on the 10th, but I'll discuss that in a separate thread.

Good luck and rest after. No need to post here right away making us couch warmers feel bad.

G/L on the run. I've done a half marathon twice. I can't imagine the training, recovery, and pain you guys/gals go through to make it the other 13 miles. My hat's off to you.

Sweetness! Is it your first or... ?

Incidentally, only 3 months? I think I trained for like 6 before my first (probably only) marathon.

Where is it? I hope it's not in Michigan as we've had a blizzard for the last two days here...

Good luck. I ran my first marathon 5 years ago, been doing it every year since. Just watch out for the wall and make sure to get a lot of Vitamin C afterward.

It's harder, but I think the step up from 1/2 to full is less than a regular joe who does little/no running would find going from their little/no running to a half.

Hey Skoorb, you still visit RW forums? I don't know if you are aware that when they upgraded the forum software and it went to hell, some peeps created a new forum called runango.

Definitely admirable to run a marathon, physically and mentally. Let us know how it went.

There is indeed a big difference going to the whole marathon; somewhere around 22-24 miles, the human body runs out of juice and decides it wants to quit unless you have pushed it beyond that point often. That's what makes the marathon so tough. Also, if you look at training programs, they don't have you run more than about 20 miles - this is so you don't know how rough the last few will be and give up before the marathon begins.

Jeebus, and I can only run 4 miles daily. And forget today with the weather. Good luck OP. Be sure to get good rest afterwards too.

I think running out of juice is more based on training than anything. There are a great many people who do 50ks or 50 mile races or even longer and consider the distance of a regular marathon to not be all that bad and then there are people who will run out of juice much earlier.

It's a room for debate, but among elite marathoners, most will train up to 22 and 24 mile runs, but too many long runs or runs of too great a distance become deleterious. I think a lot of people run out of juice at 20 miles simply because it is the longest they've done and they're not really used to running all that much, so they decided they wanted to do a marathon and trained "ok" for it, but only doing one or two 20 mile runs and probably carrying too much weight to be a good distance runner means that come mile 24 they'll be part of the shuffling masses.

I only did one but found that around 21-22 I could feel my energy going down and it just got worse and worse, but my overall speed did not decrease, it was just more and more difficult to keep up the speed. I saw LOT of people walking those last few miles, though. I don't think it was a body limitation for them so much as just inadequate training or weight or on-the-run fueling.

Here is the marathon I did

Its a smaller event and a relatively easy out and back course. The results haven't been posted on the site yet, but my time was around 4hr 13m and some change.

There were some snags though, roughly at the 5mi mark, my camelpak sprung a leak and leaked freaking COLD water all down my backside before I could get it off. I had to leave it at one of the aid stations. Well it was more comfortable to run without it, it did leave me dependent on the aid stations for water.

I did the first 13 miles without too much trouble, though there was some difficulty at the start because it was chilly outside. It was in the low 40s or so, and some people were walking around in skin tight bicycle shorts only. Too bad it wasn't any of the cute girls doing that, it was only older men. There were a few cute ladies there though, and I paced a few on the first 13 miles. Seems there were all doing the half marathon though because I lost them after the 13mi turn around.

My training program isn't really consistent, unfortunately. With my work and school schedules, I don't always have the time to run when I want to. The PT we do for the Air Force in my flight doesn't exactly cut it for marathon training. Typically, I'll run between 4.5 and 6 miles Monday through Friday, and shoot to do a longer, 10+ run on Saturday. The longer run usually gets axed so I can spend time on homework. And it usually costs me on the long runs.

This marathon was composed of 4 legs, each around 6.5mi long. The Half Marathoners went out and back once, the Full Marathoners went out and back, then out and back again. The third leg was definitely my worst. The lack of constant water into my body began to really hurt. The 1st and 3rd legs are also uphill, a shallow grade, but uphill none the less. I did a lot of walking on the third leg. Then someone caught up to me and I was able to pace them for a while.

Luckily, I picked up a packet of carb gel at the furthest aid station. Once that stuff hit my blood stream, I was only to finish the 4th leg running roughly 9min miles. I did bring some Special K yogurt meal bars, which I ate after the 13mile turn around, and the 19.75mile turnaround.

The plus side is the the last hundred yards or so of the run are downhill, so its 'easy' to 'sprint' into the finish. At the finish, two volunteers greeted me, patted me on the back, removed the chip from my shoe, and placed a finishers medal around my neck.

Its made from a simple brown metal, likely a cheap metal. It says '13th Annual ARR Desert Classic Marathon Finisher, February 4th, 2007.'

I want to do another marathon, but I'm looking at the ARR Calendar, and most of the events are in Sedona, Tuscon, and Prescott. Those are all fairly long drives for me, and with the start times, I'd have to leave my apartment before 3am to make it in time.
