Wife has been diagnosed with acute ocular hypertension in 1 eye and the 2 ophthalmologists in the practice don't know why. So they want to send her to the medical college for tests. The college says they don't take our insurance. The wife tells they we'll pay cash since our deductible sucks anyway. "We don't take cash." wut? Why wouldn't they take cash?

Had the same problem several years back with another of her Dr.s She forgot her insurance card (different provider than now) and they wouldn't see her without the card. "We'll pay cash." Nope.

What gives?


The drops have brought the pressure down to normal but we still need to find the cause. And there isn't any other facility in the area so the insurance "might" figure out how to get a waiver.

But they'll take cash/check/money order/credit card when we pay their bill. Strange.

On the plus side I haven't been dragged of my United flight yet but we are stuck on the tarmac because someone parked a truck in front of our gate

I wasn't the one on the phone but if I say "cash pay", that should include checks/cards...right? "Cash pay" to me means to insurance to file.

Because you asked, I just called a friend that works for a Dr. Her understanding is the same as mine.

Cash in this sense, means not running it through insurance and paying as an individual.

Some places may not want to deal with the accounting processes and patient sign-offs required in order to not bill it through insurance.

Some places may not want to deal with firm charges, and like the obfuscation insurance provides for fraudulent purposes.
