We all know that Yahoo emails were hacked a couple years ago, all email accounts were compromised. Yahoo took a couple years to realize this.

They've now locked me out of my email because I refuse to give them some more security information to compromise. So they screw up, crap security, and their answer is to seek more information to compromise. Yes, that sounds like a good plan! just not for me.

Google knows too much already, so forget gmail. Screw my friends at Microsoft.

Can someone reccomend a decent choice for somewhere to set up my email accounts? Thank you in advance for your input. Free is good, just a decent service software wise and such.

How about one provided by your ISP?

A private hosted e-mail account? There's no guarantee of privacy with that option, but at least it logically follows that if you're paying them for the service, then they have a revenue source out of it, rather than trying to find a way to fund a free e-mail service.

Or do what I do and host it yourself?

Please let us know when you have provided all your personal information to Yahoo. Lead the way there bright bulb.
Why would anyone provide personal information to anywhere but where the law requires?

Hosting your own server is possible, but, there really is no point in that, the mail still hits a ton of other servers, so anything sent/received can easily be snooped on.

I kinda had the same question as OP. I have tons of old emails in Yahoo. Is GMail or any another mainstream web based email service that much more secure that it's worth moving everything there?

I'd say it is 'for now', but that could change in the future. Yahoo is just terrible. They're the adobe flash of email.

I use openmailbox(which I pay for), and have gmail for legacy mail, as well as a handful of other services for specialty purposes. None have had the problems of yahoo that I'm aware of.

I tried to use YMessenger ( that failed to connect )
So I went to Y Email... and they told me to create a new PW.
When I logged in ... ALL my Emails and contacts were gone.

About, 15 years of correspondence gone.

Anyway, I use " mail.com " ( FREE ) but its heavily scripted.
( I use the non-java --- no frills version )

Many years ago they also had problems with hacking.
( the Advertising scripts were injecting maleware on my PC )

I can't imagine. I sorry for you man. But...what protocol was your previous mail using ? You know that i think imap protocol stacks mails on the server itself but it erases them from time to time. Even though if that's the case you might be able to retrieve something. Just a guess.

This article has the type of info I was looking for: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/12/my-yahoo-account-was-hacked-now-what/
Q: I’ve been using Yahoo for years. If this service can’t be trusted, what would you recommend?

A: I’ve used Google Mail (Gmail) for more than a decade, but your mileage may vary. I moved virtually all of my email activity to Gmail years ago mainly because they were among the first to offer more robust authentication and security measures, such as two-step authentication. And they continue to innovate in this space. If you’d like to migrate the messages from your Yahoo account to a Gmail account, see these instructions.

Too bad that don't work on many accounts. Or I should say, it only works sometimes for certain messages. If you have tons of mail, then it will end up giving you a generic error message.

My hotmail account got hacked in 2010. Had that thing for ten years as my primary free account. Microsoft locked me out of there. Since I didn't have give them any of those security questions or phone numbers I couldn't get back into my account. Today, I have my Yahoo and Gmail backed up to one another.

mail.com only works for existing users and the registration page doesn't work anymore.
inbox.com has discontinued their free service and deleted off their free accounts years ago.

Got you. I have a friend who's had a long standing account and still uses them.
