Already a Cat 4, max sustained winds 135 mph

Current prediction shows a pretty good chance of it smacking into Florida around Tuesday, although that's a long way off and anything could happen between now and then.

Looks like it's heading toward the Gulf; and NOLA is right in the center of the current cone. Good luck to you Louisiana area people; hopefully it diminishes in intensity to closer to a tropical storm before it makes landfall.

Good luck to ATOT members in the Galveston/Houston area. All we can do now is hope the storm surge isn't as bad as they say it may be.

I'll stay up here in Canada and deal with the -50C windchills. At least I get to keep my house and stuff. Sucks for the people that become victim of these though... specially when they're once a year, or in some cases, 13 times a year.

How does home insurance work there anyway, do they cover that or what?

Insurance will cover damage - however, the cost of insurance has skyrocketed since Andrew hit.

Flooding is a possibility and is a seperate insurance policy.

Next week, be concerned.

After that, not a problem unless you need to go to where a direct hitwas and there is a lot of debris.

Much also depends where in Florida you are going.

Come Sunday, the picture will be much clearer in terms of a southern (Gulf), central (Fla) or northern (Carolina) track

Interesting - historical paths from where Ike is look almost nothing like where most of the models have it heading. Not that I believe the models any less.

i believe some of the models actually look at some of the historical paths, can't remember where i read that.

I fully believe that hurricane models are made by giving 6 year olds crayons and a map of the Western hemisphere.

It could be as strong as Andrew when it hits, but Andrew cut straight across the state, if Ike hits S. FL then guts the state up the middle the evacuation scenario will be a nightmare. I'm finishing up my plywood cuts and stockpiling as much gas as possible this weekend..

I've survived several Hurricanes here in South Florida(Miami) the past several years including Andrew many moons ago. None have had me as concerned since then as Ike just has. Hopefully, it misses Florida but if it makes a direct hit on the country as a Cat 4 or 5, God help us all.

All predicted tracks showing it sliding along Cuba (which will weaken it) and then heading back into the Gulf (strengthing) to a Cat 3
