Why is this Judge Emmett guy called upon for so much?

Does he trump the Mayor?

The "County Judge" in Texas isnt a traditional judge. The County Judge is the chief administrator for a county. The Commissioners Court, isnt your typical court. Its the policy making body for the County.

Hon. Ed Emmett is the Harris County Judge. He oversees the country Houston is in.

Then they shouldn't have a Mayor.

Cities have mayors. Counties have County Judges/Commissioners Court.

Mayors are responsible for the city. County Judges/Commissioners Court are responsible for the whole county, but more specifically the rural and unincorprated areas.

While Houston takes up all of Harris County, and some parts of other counties. County Judges are required by the Texas Consitution.

I don't want to sound like an ass, but you're an idiot. Watch the news, there's major damage - Reliant Stadium is missing part of the roof, a lot of the glass buildings in downtown are missing 50% of their windows with papers and furniture being thrown around. There's flooding all over, houses FLOATING AWAY, and most of Galveston is now part of the bay.

ICRS is just a troll. Please quit feeding him.

Seriously. Isn't this the same dipshit that said it would be funny if this was a major disaster?

And the real problem will be that for the next potential big one, they will think that the system was overblown. No evacuation and higher causality numbers.

Had Ike spent 1-2 more days over the Gulf, the damage would have been much more severe.
The strength would have increased, the surge would have been higher.

power is back on.

houston isn't all of harris county (it's about half by population). i live in harris county but not a city. so the highest local authority is the county judge.

county judges may sit as the judge of a regular court, but in large counties like harris, the county judge usually is the top executive and legislative official. we've got a lot of regular courts.

the county judge system was put in place by the texas constitution, which was written a long time ago when a lot of texas counties had very little local government or need of local government.

Where are you that you have power?

Have you heard any word about League City?
I've heard that power will be back on soon or it could take up to 4 weeks. I'm interested in what the conditions will be when I return on Monday. (Evac'd to Dallas)

LC is pretty bad, their website is saying nothing for TWO weeks.

http://www.ci.league-city.tx.us/

I'm at 610 and 59 (near the Galleria) and I have power and water is returning gradually.

Yup that's what I was afraid of.

I'm picking up a generator tomorrow before returning. Not sure how much gas I'll need however.

My neighbor stayed and said we didn't flood, although he noticed my house was missing shingles so I want to get back and assess the damage. (I've picked up tarps, cleaning supplies, a generator and some tools)

I survived!!! and I have power!

It is nice being in a prime spot to get power as there is a water treatment station right next to my place. Basically since noon I had running fresh water and power at least, but everything else nearby is still out.

Which only means I have about a dozen people now over sleeping on my couch, futon, and some floor space right now. Most of them are sleeping right now with a couple out on a smoke break outside. Only a couple managed to bring over any extra food, so they've all been eating my pantry out. Oh well, going to make them all go home tomorrow and bring what they can, because I can't afford to feed this many people for a week or so or whatever it takes for the power to get turned on where they live.

Just a small gripe, luckily, no real damage was sustained at my home, but everywhere else nearby has had it much worse.

I'm still sleepy though, didn't much sleep last night with that wind howling and hearing stuff crashing all around. Strange as it was, my porch was almost completely calm as it had a nice wind break and I could sit outside during the storm this morning and watch it in all it's fury.

My son lives near Katy somewhere.

not bad. about 3" of rain only. haven't been out to see whether anyone else has power.
like the above poster, i'm basically next to a water treatment plant. we've got a treatment plant on one side, gas storage on another, and an elementary on a third side. so we were bound to get power early.

I live in Katy, and a neighborhood a half-mile from me was without power, but I think they might have been restored. Some reports of trees down, fence damage, some roof damage, but otherwise, I'm hearing most people didn't have any serious damage.

Rescue crews race clock to find, save Ike victims

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ike

"Authorities hoped to spare thousands of Texans ? 140,000 by some estimates who ignored orders to flee ahead of Hurricane Ike ? from another night among the destruction. Some had been rescued, but unknown thousands remained stranded."

shouldn't the hospitals have back up generators they can run on?

A lot of hospitals are running on back up generators right now. One hospital in SE houston had to be closed due to flooding. The medical center in downtown has underground power, so they weren't as affected by power outages compared to the rest of Houston.

didn't hear a generator driving around it. those things are loud.

lost power again at 6:30 when a front blew through. it briefly flickered back on at 8:30 or 9. i don't think that's a good sign.

You won't hear the generators, they're on top of the buildings in water/sound proof rooms.

Anyone know if HCC central campus is open tomorrow? My sister-in-law's brother is a teacher and can't find any info. Of course that is the one school that isn't listed on the closings websites.
