Ike keeps curving out to the West like this and it is going to be hitting S. Texas or Mexico.

Not likely this time of the year. Too much westerlies.

The high developing may not even be strong enough to keep it aimed at Galveston, it could still head towards western Lousiana.

In any case this one is a tricky one.

They've already called off evacuations for the Keys.

Latest Track is showing it hitting S. Texas. Could still go anywhere but the track keeps pushing West.

The big question now is how much will it strengthen in the warm gulf waters. It's going to hit land - that much isn't a question.
I wouldn't count the west coast of southern Florida out of the woods yet.
They safe yet?

No

Right now it's a battle between the very small high in the northwest gulf and the very strong westerlies running right through the heart of the southern states at the moment.

The storm could still gain enough and it's own steering currents and head up.

Interesting to watch this one

lmao, I was being sarcastic. Of course they're safe. Tropical storm winds at best, as predicted, given the diameter of the hurricane.

Not looking good for the Gulf states; but at least Southern Florida was spared a direct hit.

I see it curving up the west coast once it passes the keys.

Hopefully I am WRONG this time but I have called every storm right this season so far far better than the official forecasts with their fancy computer models that they rely too much on.

I don't see it making the extreme left hand turn in Georgia like they are showing.

ORLY? no left turn?

Stop lying.

You and the officials said it would trek on to Texas and you said you would not see rain from the system.

I said it would go northeast and North Carolina would get rain from it and it did.

I conceded it went a little further west than I originally thought but it certainly came back northeast as I said it would.

Stop lying.

Anyone else in the Houston area? They've closed a lot of campuses around the area, and mandatory evacuations for coastal areas.

Looks like IKE is going to steam roll my city.

looks like it, it keeps shifting north. Bastard hurricane.. going to have to drive in traffic again to dallas for 20 hours... at least you dont live 1/4 miles from the beach like i do.

I'm hoping that the current model shifts, otherwise I'll be having the eye of the storm right over my county, not to mention the chaos of evacuation.

Bah. Looks like I'm going to get spared the worst of it. And I even took the Dishes off my roof to keep them from hitting my truck :frown:

Worst of all, I will probably have to to go work this weekend, too! :|

Stupid hurricane.

At the time it was a battle between a small high and weak trough.

They were saying it would go into south Texas then. Is it hitting south Texas now?

It must be.

Surf's up in Galveston.

http://www.cnn.com/video/live/live.html?stream=stream2

LIFE THREATENING INUNDATION LIKELY!

ALL NEIGHBORHOODS...AND POSSIBLY ENTIRE COASTAL COMMUNITIES... WILL BE INUNDATED DURING HIGH TIDE. PERSONS NOT HEEDING EVACUATION ORDERS IN SINGLE FAMILY ONE OR TWO STORY HOMES WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH. MANY RESIDENCES OF AVERAGE CONSTRUCTION DIRECTLY ON THE COAST WILL BE DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD AND DEVASTATING PERSONAL PROPERTY DAMAGE IS LIKELY ELSEWHERE. VEHICLES LEFT BEHIND WILL LIKELY BE SWEPT AWAY. NUMEROUS ROADS WILL BE SWAMPED...SOME MAY BE WASHED AWAY BY THE WATER. ENTIRE FLOOD PRONE COASTAL COMMUNITIES WILL BE CUTOFF. WATER LEVELS MAY EXCEED 9 FEET FOR MORE THAN A MILE INLAND. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN MULTI-STORY FACILITIES RISK BEING CUTOFF. CONDITIONS WILL BE WORSENED BY BATTERING WAVES. SUCH WAVES WILL EXACERBATE PROPERTY DAMAGE...WITH MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF HOMES...INCLUDING THOSE OF BLOCK CONSTRUCTION. DAMAGE FROM BEACH EROSION COULD TAKE YEARS TO REPAIR.

Downtown Houston is practically closed through the weekend. I was sent home at noon. So, if anything good came out of this hurricane, it's that I got a 4 day weekend out of it.

Good lord, talk about strong language. I live in The Heights area of Houston and I'm riding this thing out. This will be our first major hurricane since Alicia in 1983, and I was only 4 then so I don't remember much.
