Good eyes, but two CSRs claim it's pristine, (so naturally I had to grab one to go with an old pair of B&W 802s, also in black ash).

Eight left now.

Remember, watts aren't everything. The spec sheet from Yamaha says the internal amp is only 800 watts @ 6 Ohms. It does however lack specs on the amp, such as how that output is measured (peak, RMS, IPP, etc) or at what THD. Quite often they won't quote the RMS output since it is much lower. A 20 watt amp can output 600 watts instantaneous peak to peak.

I'm not sying this isn't a good deal, but I would find out more about this before making an actual purchase. Actually listening to it would be even better.

Almost all home subs are measuresd in peak watts, so divide that by 2 and you make have an accurate rms value. 1000 watts rms to a 10" driver is doable, (ala JL 10W7), but not for 300 dollars for the sub and amp, so I am sure it isn't near 1000 rms. Besides, to much power into a cheap sub only makes it sound worse, so in the cheap department, looking for huge power numbers in counterproductive. Just put the sub in the corner of the room for some corner loading and that will make it louder.

Exactly. Black and somewhat expensive were crucial criteria for me.

Always a good idea. But just where might one do that? And also before they go OOS? (I'm still waiting on a second set of Yamaha USBs that buy.com was giving away for $14 recently).

Three left.

Well, to be fair, I don't think this sub has typically sold for $300. Looking at consumer reviews, most people have paid $450-750 so the MSRP when it first came out was fairly high.
Still, you're right, I really doubt that it can really do 800 watts RMS. My guess is closer to 250. I still think it's a good deal based on the reviews.

Spot on, according to StinkyWeasel's review (#6 of 58) here:

Reviewed by: Stinkywizlteats, AudioPhile, from Auburn

Summary:
For those who may be wondering I contacted Yamaha regarding the RMS power rating for the YST-SW800. The reply that i recieved stated that the 1000 watt rating that is stated for the sub is the peak power and not the RMS wattage. Yamaha could not provide me with the RMS output for this particular sub. I hope this does not discourage anyone from buying this sub but I thought it might be helpful to those that are intreasted in purchasing this sub.

correct me if I'm wrong...I've been wrong before but if I remember correctly...going back to 1989 Navy avionics training....Isn't the RMS about 63.6% of the peak?

It totally depends, there is no fixed number. I am more into car audio, but I learned this much from there.

RMS is all that matters, peak means crap.

WRONG! Dividing by two to get RMS is like saying that Pi = 3. Mmmmmmmmmm, Pi....

lol, your right, but I bet that the amp can't really hit 1000 watts peak in real operating conditions, hence, not only am I accounting for the root of 2 factor, but I am adding in my own factor for yamaha's very likely overestimated engineering specs and saying divide by half for a realistic rms value.

Don't be such an ass. never did I say rms is half of peak for a sine wave. I said divide by two for a more realistic ESTIMATE. Although I did type make instead of may, but thats another issue entirely.

Filez, your name wouldn't be Tim would it?
