Thanks for the heads-up. I was going to pick up the SCSI model that Yamaha sells, so I thought maybe they have that on sale, too, but they don't. They DO have the rebate for it, though, so I guess I'll send that in for a little extra cash. Thanks!

I have a Yamaha 4/2/6 SCSI drive right now, and the only time I've ever produced coasters was with cheap Hotan media I was given. Once I finally got through that crappy stuff and into better CDRs, I've had consistantly good burns. My Dad has the same model, and he's burned well over 1000 CDs with few problems. He was actually using the same Hotan media (who do you think gave it to me?), and once he changed it was OK.

The reviewer on that site says that a good hard hit on the side of his case produced a bad burn, but he didn't say what the Plextor drive did in the same situation, even in the review of the Plextor drive. I have a feeling most drives would give a bad burn when you do that, no?

would this drive be better than the lite-on 12x10x32? I got it for $100 about a month ago, don't know if i should return it and get the yamaha...

This is a good deal.

Maybe it doesn't have Burnproof, but it does have an 8MB buffer.
CD-R media is so cheap these days, who cares if you ruin a disc.

My sister has this same drive, and I gave her some of the "Prime Peripherals" 80MIN 16X discs (from the office depot deal awhile ago) and they all burned successfully in under 5 minutes. These are cheap discs too.

Lacking burnproof technology is not the end all of this CD-RW.

Who is paying the rebates? If it's Yamaha, are they any good with rebates? The only successful rebates that i've received were from Kingston when I bought their RAM last year. 12 weeks to get here, but not too bad.

I think Yamaha is pretty good. So far, I've used

Philips 2x2x6 internal SCSI (crap, my first one)
Acer 4x2x10 internal EIDE (sold it later, also crap)
Yamaha 4x2x6 external SCSI (good, gave it to my friend)
Plextor 8x2x20 internal SCSI (good, still using)
Plextor 12x4x32 external SCSI (great, still using)
Iomega 10x8x32 internal EIDE (burn-proof, good, still using)
Teac 16x10x40 internal EIDE (just got it, burn-proof, will try later)
Philips 8x4x32 internal EIDE (will get it next week, will try later)

In my opinion, Plextor and Yamaha are the best in CDRW world.

Been using a old 8X SCSI CDR burner for years and never had a coaster unless I bought some crap media. Burn's on the fly <8 minutes. Get over this burn-proof feature as it's not the main feature you should look for in a burner.

If the burner has 8mb buffer, it really doesn't matter whether it has burnproof or not. 8mb is big and usually the burner does not burn any coaster with such a big buffer.

Burn-proof helps you if you are trying to do something that requires a lot of hard drive reading and cpu usage WHILE you burn a CD. Don't expect to start a burn and play CS or something and not produce coasters... that's not what these are designed for

As for me, this is a good deal, since Yamaha is a solid CDRW producer, along with Plextor and Ricoh. If I was told to choose between the 16x yamaha for $100+ and 12x Plextor for $150+... I'd probably go for the yamaha.

Just an opinion

darktorch: I have the Liteon 16x burner and can vouch that it is a really great drive! The burn-proof on it really helps out, as i can play Q3, UT, or any other game while burning a cd in the background in 5 minutes flat!

Personally, I would choose it over the Yamaha drive....

just my $0.02

Just a status update, the Yamaha drives are:

Availability: On Order; usually ships within 1-2 weeks.

So that means if you guys really want to wait for it to come in, but 16x burners are going to start dropping in price soon. So many of them are now around $100 with some sort of MIR.

Enjoy.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's back in stock. Go get them!

I have a Yamaha 4x4x16 that I have had for 3 years and I have never written a coaster with it.

Actually they might not drop much more. Atleast for a quality burner like a Yamaha. They may just stop making them. Like the 1,2,4,6x, etc. burners. You may find a Memorex or a Phillips for less. Probably not a Yamaha or a Plextor.

I think I may have found a better deal:
Go to officemax. They have the yamaha drive for $229.99. Pricematch it with Dell using the 20% off link, for $135.96. Then use the officemax $25 of 100 coupon found at your favorite website t3chb@rg@ins and reduce the price to $115.96. Then mail in the rebate for $50 from yamaha and your total cost is $55 plus whatever tax on the $115.96.

Can you just give the OM B&M the coupon code without a printed coupon?

Also... too bad the 20X is not at OM yet.... and that the rebate is not for it... That would put the 20X YAMI burner at around $117!

Can anyone verify if OfficeMax will allow us to pricematch with the 20%-discounted Dell price? I would think that they would only pricematch the pre-discount price, although I hope I am wrong.

Thanks.
