I was shopping around for a decent 5.1 HTIB system and decided to go with the Yamaha YHT-380 600watt 5.1 system. According to members at the AVS forum its pretty decent for the price; speakers/sub are ok and the receiver is actually pretty decent.

The online price is listed as $330 + tax, shipping is $30-ish but free in-store pickup. At $330 it is a ok deal considering what you get. However when I went to go checkout at the San Diego, CA (Mira Mesa) store it rang up as $207.99!! I also used some gift cards to bring the price down even further. For this price I think its HOT considering it includes a decent set of 5.1 speakers and actual real receiver instead of those all-in-one combo reciever/dvd packages. For the price it can't really be beat. No HDMI inputs is the only main con I can think of, but for this much I wouldn't really complain.

This type of system would be nice for a small/medium sized room, overkill PC/Console gaming speakers, etc. If you do decide to pickup this system I highly recommend you get a spool of 16 or 14 guage speaker wire as the included speaker wire is only good for dental floss.

Thanks! Good timing as I was just looking for better sound for a secondary TV room. If this price is available locally, 'think I'll take this over the low-end Onkyo HTIB.

That said, the inputs on this [glancing at the downloaded Yam Quick-Install manual] appear quite limited and one should check these if you're assembling anything complicated: a single coaxial input means my back-room's DVD and computer will have to swap this co-ax' input (no fiber-out on either); I didn't see any S-video inputs, so DVD and computer will have to use component (ridiculously, into the TV's composite-only inputs).

The YHT-390 adds 2 HDMI inputs/1 output to this, and has probably obsoleted the 380, hence the sale. I noticed that these HDMI inputs are audio pass-thru -- that they require additional audio cables if the sound's to be heard through the 390's speakers. So it goes....

Edit: YHT-380 is OOS at Deptford, NJ, BB; plenty of 390's, for $400 (yuck).
