Also, have you verified that the HDMI cable you're using is good? As mentioned above, this could be an HDCP handshake issue. Sometimes flaky cables can result in handshake issues that result in zero sound/video. Just test it on a known working set up (e.g. your computer if HDMI-enabled or a friend's setup). You don't need super high end cables by any means. But sometimes that crap that comes with a receiver or BD player is so low end that problems can arise (assuming you're using a new cable that came with the receiver).
And as someone else posted, read through the manual carefully. There may easily be some setting that is wrong.
Finally, you should look up your receiver model on avsforum.com to see if anyone has reported similar problems over there.
