Obama would score some (much needed) points within the LGBT community if he came out and publicly condemned this action.

Who knows what the fuck he'd do this time. Very first thing he did in office was condemn a white cop as a racist before he even understood the situation.

We don't even know where this occurred, and his local laws aren't relevant unless this incident happened to occur where he lives (which, if memory serves, is Alaska).

Assuming, for purposes of discussion, this incident did happen in Maryland, MD state law provides that while the use of force is authorized to protect another from imminent bodily harm, the defender may use "no more force than [is] reasonably necessary to defend the person defended in light of the threatened or actual force." MPJI-Cr 5:01.

Given that an old lady managed to chase these girls away it seems to me like a tough sale to claim that shooting them was the least level of force needed to protect the victim.

While there is the strictly scientific classification for humans (ie homo sapiens, your DNA etc), one can argue that human beings differentiate themselves from the rest animal kingdom by being able to behave in a way that's grounded in reason, respects the humanity of others and does not treat life cheaply.

Those who show they don't know better or refuse to act in a way that exemplifies their humanity are animals.
