YAQST: Quitting Smoking Today

So a week from today I turn 29. I come to this realization at least once every year that I have been smoking for XX Years. Next week it will be roughly 15 years of smoking. I just can't do it anymore.

I'm generally an unhealthy person. I attribute most of this to smoking. I can't really exercise, because I get winded quickly and just give up. Many of my bad habbits point to smoking. So I made the decision today to start at the worst of my habbits and work on the others as time goes by.

I've tried it all in the past. The patch, Wellbutrin, patch, Smoke Away, and recently Chantix. The patch works for me for a while, but no good when I get down to the lower mg. Chantix was nice, though it gave me stomach problems. The only thing that ever really worked was getting my wisdom teeth removed. I had quit for 6 months at that time. Both my boss and my mom are now addicted to nicotine gum, so I haven't even bothered to go that route.

So, as of this writing, I haven't smoked for 15 hours. Granted, 6 of that was sleeping. I'm doing fairly well right now. There are some awesome obstacles I have both at work and at home, however, I believe I can get past them.

Anyway, wish me luck, give me words of encouragement, or threadjack, whatever floats your boat.

Cliffs:
1. 15 years smoking
2. Unhealthy
3. Tried it all
4. I'm done.

Discard cigarettes and related items from your surroundings - empty packs, lighters, matchboxes, ashtrays, tin cases, et al. Tell your smoker friends to not smoke around you. Tell your SO/wife to turn into an annoying anti-smoking Nazi. Avoid places where smokers tend to gather.

Chewing gum 24/7 helps. It keeps your mouth busy.

I have tried (and failed) several times - don't let it happen to you.

Good luck man.

I'm thinkin I need to quit also. I've only smoked for a bit over two years but it's long enough.

I quit almost 7 months ago using the patch. The patch reduces the intensity of the withdrawal, but it also stretches out the withdrawal for about 2 months. The worst part of the quiting experience was the constipation. When I would move down to a lower level of nicotine, my bowels would stop working for a few days. This was especially bad because I was also eating more food to fight the withdrawal. The constipation would go away after a few days.

It took me about 6 months of being off the patch before I started to feel normal. I've been moving for the last couple of days, and I've noticed that I'm not breathing nearly as hard as I used to breath.

Good luck with the cold turkey thing. I've heard that once you make it past the third day, you should start feeling better.

This is roughly my story as well. The patch worked for me. I found I could start at step 2 and still make it through the days. I would buy step 1's and cut them in half, though, since the patches at every step are the same price for 14 patches, they're just smaller.

I could ween myself off the patch entirely after about 2 months. That being said, I've re-lapsed a few times in my past. It doesn't change the fact that every opportunity to have a smoke you have to make a willful and conscious decision to say no.

I forget who said it, but I always kept in mind the fact that "when you're run over by a train, it isn't the caboose that kills you, its the engine -- the very first car."

Hey good luck mang, I wish you the best.

Why isn't this thread at 5 stars? I can't imagine why anyone would rate this anything but 5 stars.

I stopped smoking 3 years ago cold turkey after smoking a pack a day for 10 years.
One thing that I felt really helped me was that I told everyone I knew, including all my smoking buddies that I stopped.
This way I'd feel like a tool smoking with them.
I also made sure NOT to avoid the places I used to smoke at.
I immediately went to those places while my resolve was strong and I didnt smoke there.
It was much easier to go there afterwards and not smoke.

Good luck!

Within a week you'll be able to smell, taste and have a bit more energy.

i have quit for almost two months, relapsed for 3 months after quitting for 5. i have smoked for three years.

i went cold turkey both times, and you will always find more money in your wallet, especially if cigarettes are taxed heavily in your state.

Just wanted to check in for those that have sent me PMs and those in this thread. Thanks all for the support and kind words. I am now at 24+hrs without and I'd be a liar to say it is easy. Not by choice, I am drinking (well somewhat by choice) and having friends over tonight. It will be rough, but I KNOW I can do it.

@ Spikesoldier: Cigarettes are $4.85 after tax on average in my state. I figured it out and on average price over 15 years, I have smoked $20K plus in cigarettes. This doesn't include my wife which I would say I pay for 90%.
