Based on the "edited" video that we see, it's justified.

Cop pulls lady over for doing 71 in 55. Asks her to turn off vehicle while he walks back to his vehicle. Woman speeds off from that point. Cop chases her down and gets her pulled over again. Woman is going bat shit insane in yelling at the cop. Of course is cop is yelling at her, but giving her lawful orders especially in light of the fact she just fled from an officer moments ago. Cop asks woman to stand at the back side of the vehicle so she is in plain view while he goes back to his car. She instead rushes back into her vehicle forcing him to chase her. Then her teenage son exits the van to assault the officer. First officer brings out his taser to stop the boy and chases him around to side door. Boy locks the door as other police are arriving and witnessed the scene of the first officer being attacked and then chasing the boy back into the van. First officer tries to break window in to get at the family inside. Van starts to speed off as a third officer appears at the scene. Third officer is unaware of the occupants in the van, only that they assaulted a fellow officer and are now speeding off to resist arrest.

Cops can use up to deadly force in that instant. You DO NOT FLEE FROM OFFICERS AFTER PERFORMING A CRIME. Third officer fires, but it is clear he is shooting out the tires as the van flees. The video shows a tire was hit while being shot and later when the police catch up to the van the back left tire is flat.

All I can say from the editted video is that the shooting by the third officer at the van was indeed justified. I cannot believe that anyone could at all defend that woman. She is a complete idiot. And she basically used her younger children as a human shield. No different than a criminal taking a child as a hostage. She and her teenage son need to be behind bars for their actions for a very long time.

Can't they just follow her? Not enough crime to shoot a family. Why not just get back in the car and pursuit again. Now she has 4 violations on her. Just keep adding that violations and call a backup. Its establish the mom is nuts but do you shoot a crazy person because they are crazy. People do crazy things if they have to pay a fine.

Shooting not justified...because the cop who did the shooting according the news reports came upon the scene late and was NOT aware that there were children in the van....

I think this cop is going to lose his job.....since when do you shoot first and ask questions later?? Especially when you come upon the sceneand there are already other coops and you have not been informed of the kids being in the van??

It was no longer a ticket after the son attacked the officer and she decided to resist arrest. And, the officer didn't just shoot into the cabin from what I saw in the video.

You cares if its just a ticket or not, its not like the van was shooting at anyone....the police shot at unarmed people FFS, there is no case where that is acceptable IMO

And let the mother turn everything into a high speed chase where she goes even further into stupid so she rams her car into another family car causing serious injury or death to a completely innocent family with their children as well as her own?

Two can play this what if game. If the cops just decide to give chase when they have a chance of stopping her by sooner the tires out, they could be liable for actions she commits later. Well not really, but public perception of their liability would still be there.

The whole thing is the result of the mother not wanting to get caught with drugs by the police. Her fault entirely. To pin anything on the cops based upon her actions is asinine. The cops would never have shot if she had complied with them from the start. By resisting arrest and assaulting an officer she risks being shot at. Those are things you just don't do. Especially as more cops show up at a scene and only are there to witness the actions she is committing and not see that there are young children in the back of her vehicle.

It would have been a tragic ending had the children been shot and hurt. My heart would have gone out to the children. But I wouldn't be stupid enough to blame the cops on that had it happened. I would put the blame SOLELY where it belongs. On that dipshit mother of theirs.

Uh no. The law is very specific on this. Officer came upon a scene to watch a perpetrator resisting arrest and fleeing. Cops can use up to deadly force to stop a perpetrator that they believe will cause harm to others or themselves. That is the law in all 50 states. You don't run from the cops if you don't want to risk being shot at by the cops after you committed a violent felony such as assaulting a police officer. It is not a matter of the mother being armed, but a matter of a person fleeing in a vehicle that can be used as a deadly weapon in a high speed chase to endanger the lives of others especially after they showed they were willing to attack a police officer. If you are too ignorant to see this I can't help you.

One, it was never established they were unarmed until after the chase was over. They could have easily had a gun in the car, I'd imagine quite a few fellow ATOTs have guns in their car. Two, a car traveling at high speeds running from police after the driver was acting erratically is highly likely to cause an accident resulting in harm to innocent people, officers, or themselves. In no world should it be okay to disobey a police officer trying to do his job after you've broken the law, who gave you the benefit of the doubt by pulling you over a second time after you disobeyed him. Then, to be belligerent with said officer and have another passenger attempt to assault said officer? She is lucky her kid wasn't shot.

While that is true, it doesn't matter. They assaulted an officer before fleeing. They demonstrated they were violent ad committed a felony right there. By speeding off they are presenting themselves as a danger to the public in a willingness to use a vehicle in a high speed chase. Luckily the cop shot out the tire that prevented that sort of high speed chase from occurring which could have turned into a big tragedy. Instead we have a bunch of people on the internet that don't under the law or the situation being presented that are incorrectly denigrating the actions of the cops.

I feel like you are disagreeing with me and stopped reading after the first sentence. I said the exact same thing in my second point. =(

Nope, was just reiterating what you said That the cops only saw they displayed violence and the capacity to cause harm to another by assaulting a police officer, that they committed a felony, that they were willing to flee and resist arrest after committing the felony. The cops have no idea what this person has or is capable of doing but they do know they are capable of violence upon others including themselves. So the law says they can use deadly force at that point to stop them from posing themselves as a greater risk to others.

Your not reading what was already posted...sure the mother was a dipshit...but the lone cop and yes it was just one cop who did the shooting came upon the scene and didn`t bother to ask any of the cops who were already on the scene what the circumstances were.

Instead he just fired.......none of the other cops had their weapons drawn...this was a lone rogue cop who wanted to shoot his weapon at a van that he was not informed had children inside!!

Mother==dispshit!!
Lone cop==unemployed asshat dipshit cop!!

Wrong.

Other cops had a taser, billy club, and off to the side you see another cop with his hand on his gun. Simple fact, those are all weapons.

Again, the one cop witnessed another cop being assaulted and can see the perps fleeing the scene. He is legally justified based solely upon those two circumstances to use deadly force to stop the perps. And I agree with his shooting out the tires because 1) it stopped them from having a high speed chase 2) no one was injured.

The cop did the right thing at the right time. Completely justified in his actions.

LOL @ the son tried to keep it real and ran back like a b1tch when the cop pulled out his taser. Next time, he may not be that lucky because instead of the taser, it could be a gun.

The first cop did nothing wrong. He was nice and courtesy and all until the female dumbass decided to run away and then had the nerve to yell back that she did not.

wrong how so.....what are you smoking??
So other cops had weapons and tasers..etc...it was a lone vigilante cop who had no business shooting at that van!!
It was a lone cop who happened upon the scene after other cops were already there who proceeded to draw and shoot at the van......nothing wrong with what I said....
Your just trying to justify your misinformed diatribe!!

Well, I guess you do live in a country where you shot at each other all the time, however, unless they pull out a gun and start shooting......? I disagree that any chase should be taken at all...Would of been quite easy to follow at a safe distance, the fact that she was chased, made her try a sped off...

I still cant believe you think its acceptable to shoot at children in a van FCS....your country must truly be phucked if you think so...

You are insane. Or just a blatant cop hater. The fact that she was chase made her sped off? What kind of messed up logic is that?

Nice personal attack...do you know nothing of car chases?, if they don't pursue, she wouldn't speed, no danger, pick her up later, no one injured...

Sad indeed.

With the shoot first and ask questions later mentality any one of them could wind up on the wrong side of a Police gun by just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

there is a stupid segment of the pop that will support cops no matter what they do---murder, steal, assault etc... thats why you get cops like that drew peterson murdering three people before hes was finally "indicted" by the freaking media or cops in san francisco driving around with towels over their license plates trying to kidnap chix and still keeping their jobs

How do you know the backup officer had no idea about the situation? They invented this thing called radios which cops tend to use.

While I'm not sure why most people voted in the affirmative, perhaps some already knew they were trying to "remotely spikestrip a vehicle piloted by a maniac" or some want to see certain segments of society dead, generally as long as you comply with a police officers requests -- yes they start out pleasant and request instead of command -- and show your hands to them at all times, things go very smoothly no matter your skin color. Any deviation from this will lead to an asswhooping, as Chris Rock pointed out.

So, 1/2 the people think the officers were in the right, and the other half think that you're not allowed to shoot out the tires of a vehicle belonging to a second-time-fleeing, resisting arrest, officer-assaulting mother, UNLESS she pulls a gun and shoots at you first. And if they do shoot out the tires, it wasn't in an attempt to stop a vehicle from starting a high speed chase, putting her own family and who knows how many others in danger, but rather to pop off a few rounds for funzies.

Sure, got it.

Cops can be bad, but this time? Ya'll grasping at straws about this situation. Cops = right.

It's sad that some people think it's always the cops fault and that only cops can escalate the situation. It's like saying, the criminals wouldn't have fired their weapons if cops didn't show up to stop them, cops should always stay far, far away.
