As stupid as this sounds.. the only way Americans will ever get rid of the stupidity is to repeal the second amendment just like they repealed the 18th.

And the ignoring of the status quo puts us closer to that every waking day!
To eliminate the 2nd amendment would be like eliminating human instinct. You would be asking physically less advantaged people to not use their brains to provide themselves with equalizing strengths. You would be asking people who rely on themselves not to see you as not just uncommonly stupid but also as a dangerous threat. It is also quite likely, in my opinion, that you grew up in a police protected with some sense you could get a quick response from 911 service. You could give two shits about people far from such service.

And you wonder why people on the right who have owned guns all their lives and never shot anybody see you as they do.

We don’t even have to ban all guns. Keep bolt action rifles for hunting legal, shotguns for home defense, MAYBE revolvers. How muskets for militias got perverted into semi automatic weapons of war with extended magazines for everyone is beyond me.

You can get a taste of that kind of reasoning here. It may help to know that people can see things differently

Okay fine I’ll watch this AR15 video. But why it’s the boogeyman, 96 times this gun has been used in mass shootings.

Don’t really care about that kind of reasoning as long as those people stay out of my home state. We have one of the lowest rates of gun ownership and, surprise, the single lowest rate in the country of death by firearm.

Speaking as one of the 8% or whatever it is of people who own a gun here

edit: Hawaii is now slightly lower.

I am quite surprised and gratified to think you will watch the video. It only explains why the AR 15 is seen as a sensible choice for home defense by some people. It does not explain why it has been used 96 times to wrongfully kill people. The arms race and human survival are likely intertwined for a million years of human history. Intelligence and violence are not the same thing. A person intent on killing people is going to seek the same advantages as people trying to defend themselves from the madness of others I would suspect and we can't unlearn technological advancement. But we could do something about mental illness were we to have the capacity to see it in ourselves, I believe.

AR-15 is perfect for killing the maximum number of people in the least amount of time

Sounds like an offensive weapon to me

I know far more than I would like to about what it means not to care. It's all about rejecting experiencing the pain you would experience if you allowed yourself to care. Mass killers are also expressing the same thing, that they do not care.

Isn't it a question of motive. The best defense, I have heard, is a good offense. Seems to be a matter of point of view. It's all a matter of good and evil. Offensive power in the hands of the good is good and in the hands of evil, evil. All of this happens, of course, because people believe. They believe they know the difference between two things that don't exist. That's what I call being asleep, not knowing you are a believer in the absurd.

The only reason I need an AR-15 now is to shoot people that have AR-15s who are going to come after me and all that is decent.. In self-defense.

Thanks to people like moonbeam
100% this. the only reason I have handgun and will add to my collection because i live in an area full of crazy fucks, and live down the street from a shooting range owned by a crazy Jan 6'er that propagates conspiracies and election fraud BS. I'd rather be prepared with all these whack jobs around me.

Unless you are trying to fend off 10+ attackers a well trained person with a handgun is adequate.

People issued gun licenses should have required training and scheduled refreshers

The only reason for high capacity mags are to kill multiple people

I know what it is like to hate the world because of the feeling that life is barren and empty, that all there is for me but a life of black depression. I know what is to think about ending that pain preemptively and to suffer fear and doubt. I also know what it is like to defeat that Nothingness and be reborn. Perhaps the way you experience the world can change. I would wish you that and open such a door if I could. But I am far away and do not know enough. Still, I wish what I wish, that you find inner peace.

I think the world has so much beauty and greatness to it, and I love that I am in a specific area to enjoy so much diversity, art, culture, nature, people, expression, food on a daily basis. I count my blessings every day. t puts a pep in my step. I also appreciate the times I am able to travel to more exotic places, and just other places, and explore the differences of this world. I find so much beaty in the creativity of the human spirit. From film to writing to photos to music. I have been blessed to purchase a nice hifi headphone setup that has allowed me to hear music in ways that I never knew in 40 years on the planet, until 7 years ago. It almost makes me cry, and it definitely makes me sing at the top of my lungs and dance at my listening setup at the sheer rhapsody of the moment. It is a pure moment of the appreciation of beauty and happiness.

Understanding there is evil in this world does not change any of that. It just means I'm not an ignorant moron, oblivious to millenia of human existence, nor scoffing at the reality of history.

I see the evil in front of my face. In the past and in the present and in the future. Around the world, and here at home, it is gun nuts. Because most of them are right wing loons and evil people. And you enable the gun nut part of them, which is the part that is going to kill me and other innocents, as it has happened so much in history. Otherwise they'd be shaking their fists at the air. But you give them the weapon they need with no reasonable discourse. Repeatedly.

Every year, every day, evil is happening now. The biggest tool outside of their evil and hate, is their guns. As I said, I'm sure some of them would be reachable in many decades, and in completely different situations, but I don't have time for that ignorant lala land. These types of people have existed, exist now, and will exist when I am gone. It is time to draw the battle lines again, as has been so many times before. I'd rather lose being aware of the enemy and somewhat prepared, than some ignorant moron pleading towards the fascists as they shoot the people in front of me before getting to me.

Fuck your naive destructive point of view.

Yes, me not caring about the opinions of gun nutters regarding their AR-15s is exactly the same as mass shooters not caring about whatever it is they don’t care about.

Shouldn’t have broken my own rule and read a Moonbeam post.

That is just one reason. The other is not to have to reload where precious seconds lost doing so while under attack could cost you your life. That is an advantage to a 30 round mag. The disadvantage, in my opinion, is that it expends too far from the gun making it awkward to handle. Personally I would own 20 round mags but in California they are illegal so I own two ten round ones that are attached back to back. People in other states and criminals with high round mags in my state would have an advantage on me.

But none of it really matters to me because I haven't gotten around yet and may never get around to building a work bench and buying a proper vice to torque down the barrel. I just like putting machines together. I have an old rototiller I might try to restore instead.

lol nope. This video just confirms how crazy gun nutters are. Us in the civilized world isn’t in utter fear were we need to be armed to the teeth. Like come on, I’m from Toronto. Not scared of break ins or car jackings.

for those situations a handgun is a better defense tool. In a car you simply don't have the room to swing around a long barrel gun. Also in the home, same thing, around corners and smaller spaces. For break ins a good hand gun is the best option.

Gun nuts nut about guns like AR-15 because of small penis syndrome and being dbags, as in, they are fun!

This thread sums it up better than I could.

Be VERY CAREFUL what you wish for, re: red flag laws. The GOP will absolutely weaponize this approach. They will expand the definition of "mentally unfit" to include any non-conformist behavior. What's next? Muslim? Atheist? Woke? Ever served on a DEI committee? They will eventually label any or all of these things as mentally ill, deviant, etc. That gives them cover to strip people of their rights, or worse yet, something like mass incarceration like alluded to in the tweet below. This SCOTUS will likely allow it?

What happens next? I don't know, but there's definitely this feeling of some big push/movement about to happen.

Since there will be no repealing the 2nd A in our lifetime this might be the way to go.

I used to have a father in-law who was prescribed pills for mental issues. I was perfectly comfortable around guns, started shooting at the age of 3 with parental instruction. But this guy had mental issues and damn near a vault of firearms. If someone didn't need to have firearms, it was this guy I figured. Had some bi-polar shit I observed more than once.

For a long time I've thought anyone who ended up prescribed psychotropic drugs should be barred from having firearms, or otherwise determined to not be thinking clearly that requires counseling on an individual basis (not like, marriage counseling) or some such thing. For X amount of time until the bar has been lifted. I dunno, 5 years sounds good to prove you no longer require some sort of mental crutch.

It's not perfect and wouldn't be perfect but I could understand it. But as you say, more or less, it's a damn slippery slope and I'm not suggesting we do that but as I said ... I could understand, however much I would probably hate it.

No doubt, this atrocity did no favors for the community. This is a nightmare scenario and a dream to right wing hardliners and you've got the extreme leftists who are only too eager to engage which leaves everyone in between fucked. Steady, even hands are in short supply these days ... seemingly, everybody wants to catapult to the left or to the right.

Supposedly there was a manifesto left behind. It will be interesting to see what it says, should it come to light. I imagine the TN resident was pissed at some recent TN anti-trans laws, which will likely only renew enthusiasm for anti-trans laws across the nation instead of narrowing focus to where it belongs, i.e., people mentally fucked don't really need to be sporting firearms.
