Sucks that shipping is almost the same as the price of the fan.

I get a cheaper price if I order 2 @Jabtech. $7.20+$4.95 US Priority Shipping = $12.15

Almost all the YLs (the ones most are interested in) are sleeve-bearing. The one ball bearing unit that JT started stocking a while back is quite noisy relative to their equivalent sleeve model, but it would probably last a bit longer.

You folks realize that the Yates from Petra's Tech Shop are measurably better than those from elsewhere...

and why would this be? Same model number should be same fan and same quality unless I'm missing something.

Yes you are missing out the whole subject that has been discussed quite a lot. Go google if interested. Plus in case you are new to silent computing, check out SPCR. Yate loons are regarded as the quietest possible on budget. You do realize sleeveless can be quieter than ball bearings, right?

At least going by jab-tech's response about the inferior Yates, this must be a thing of the past as they have switched their supplier from China. IIRC some people here at AT case&cooling forum have confirmed getting units more in line with petra's, as in being different from what they used to get from jabtech in the past. I did notice the ones I got from local microcenter looked different from the ones I recently ordered from Petra's.

sorry, I meant to say sleeve-bearing. too much caffeine FTL

if you bought them just recently you should be good to go, methinks.

Well, the whole idea is hot deals not a black marketing of fans. Guess, I'll but the cheaper ones. I'm not a hard core fan freak. As for the 3-4 DB's the BallBearing puts out the fan itself will be louder then that unless your telling me your fans only make 5 DB your point is useless.

Ball bearing fans can be pretty quiet, but generally not in the price range we're discussing here. The legendary Sanyo Denki 109R1212H1011 can be pretty quiet at reduced voltages (they can often run down to below 5V) and gives lots of air, but they are $25. and up now when you can find them. And the Cooler Master Y720 series fan I'm selling in the FS/T section (linked below) is quiet at reduced voltages (down to 5V) and can put out more air than any sleeve bearing fan at the higher voltages.

The 10 Yate Loon 80mm fans I got from jabtech a year and a half ago weren't very good...clicky bearing and had wrong amps rating on the fan label.

Were these fake Yate Loons then?

5 is about $25 shipped for me. got to check my stock first, still got about 3-4 left in my reserve. good fans, last time got them at jab i think. I also got a few CM 110 CFMs decent at low rpm as well, not as quiet but has a fan controller.

I don't think anyone has claimed anything special for any other than the 120 mm Yates. I've also heard that the YL 92mm are decent. Never assume you can ascribe the characteristics of one known product to all the others in a line. I can't imagine using 80mm fans these days. If you really need them, try the Panasonic L1A. They don't put out much air but are reasonably low noise. Of course, the YL 120mm SLs don't put out a lot of air for their size either. Low flow seems to be a requirement for low noise (at least at reasonable prices).

The specs for these Yate Loon's 47CFM @ 28dBA seem kinda loud for that amount of airflow. I picked up a 4-pk of CM R4-S2S for $14.99 + shipping that are 44.73CFM @ 19.1 dBA. That's too much difference in noise to me for 2-2.5 CFM and only $1 less for 4 but I get the screws with the CM's.

Eh. They're actually about the same in terms of loudness. Take all noise ratings with a grain of salt.

Yup, mfr's noise ratings are figments of their imaginations - no standards for distance, angle or starting point (i.e. ambient noise in the testing room). The YLs are known to be low noise from multiple independent tests. The CMs can vary a lot in noise across a pack of them - I got a 4-pack once and one was definitely an outlier on the higher noise side. While a clear/blue LED one with the same model number that came stock with my 690 was lower in noise than any of the black ones, including the ones that came with it in the same 690... The Y-Ls can vary also, at least in batches of the ones Jab-tech used to carry. Not sure what kind of variance exists in their current Yates - though supposed to be more like the ones from Petra's now.

The Yates need a resistor to become quiet. I usually run them around 7V, and they are inaudible from 1m away. Good deal! I've purchased from Jabtech over the years, and haven't had any problems with their fans. For reference, my system puts out no more than 21 dB from 1m away.
