I grew up when colored was standard for black Americans (and really didn't change until early teen age). My grandmother who grew up in South Boston VA called them nigras. I still remember to this day, living in the first house I grew up was one road between my white neighborhood, and the black neighborhood called Green Valley in Arlington, VA. Never saw one black person in my neighborhood. Up the hill by that same road was a playground. Curiously, there was another playground directly across the road. Well, me being like 4 1/2 to 5 years old (yea, I got to free range) thought, why was that perfectly good playground just sitting there not being used. So I go over there try out the swing. I later go home and innocently mentioned where I had gone. Oh my god, you would have thought I attempted to break into Fort Knox. That was the first time I learned that I was not supposed to ever go on that side of the road and that apparently there was something really bad about it.#341 and we decided we don't want to use a name created during the Jim Crow era just to describe black people.
