No tip? That's something that Tsar Ivan VII would do.
I don't know what you expected. Maybe you expected them to just take it and not say anything like most places, but if it's some small chinese restaurant owned by a single family that should not be unexpected.
i certainly didnt expect to be screamed at for several minutes! the woman is known to be very cranky at times, people have had run ins with her before.
oh well, she wasted her time and lost my business.
Then she lost nothing of value.
The local Chinese place around here crosses out the tip line and puts in "0" in its spot when you pay by CC.
i have eaten there quite a bit in the past, sometimes a few times a week and bring friends.
That is why people who tip by percentage are morons. A server shouldn't get paid less just because I wanted a grilled chicken instead of a fried chicken. With me, they get paid a set amount per person at the table (they even get a tip for someone who gets just water).
The set dollar amount is a function of the restaurant type, of course. A $5 per person tip is ok at a typical restaurant, but not at a high end one.
You're an idiot. If the receipt has a line for tip how did you not think of it? And it should be about $1. Sorry but tipping isn't optional in this country. I wish it didn't exist but we can't change it
Yes this. The tipping process is or at least should be a way to give a token of appreciation rather than be an obligation. Because if it is a universal obligation and you are pressured to give a tip all time, then it might as well be part of the cost of the meal or a service charge rather than something called a "tip".
I don't buy the argument that a tip should always be given and that it should be a smaller amount or percentage for normal service and higher for excellent service. The wait staff should be paid a reasonable wage and tips should entirely be an extra "thank you" gesture from the customers who freely choose to give them.
I don't think it's an argument about cheapness, as I have no problem giving a good tip, but I don't think it should be demanded in every scenario. If I were going to be chewed out by the owner like the OP was for not giving a tip, that's certainly the kind of establishment I would want to avoid in the future. I have respect for anyone in the service industry, but no one should be treated like a immoral vagrant for not leaving a tip. That's just sad and uncalled for, and I don't see how anyone can side with the owner for lecturing a customer.
I NEVER tip just because they serve me. I tip based on the service I get and the quality of the food I am served. I never reward people based on bad service or food. Since when is a tip mandatory based solely on going to a restaurant? Also on take out orders I never tip. No service then no tip!
