We're in Austria currently, a country we've been to a few times around this time of year. I noticed there are quite a few tip jars where there haven't been previously. So glad this is a trend we're exporting...

Have some plastic coins made up. Or maybe even use currency sized notepaper.

Visited Austria years ago, the home of Swarovski crystals in a small town near Innsbruck. Some bad ass crystals inside their factory/HQ in Wattens.

Uh, no, but the pandemic deep sixed my travel plans. Here in CA when I eat out I just use the 15% metric and I'm done. If I take out, no tip.

Are you old here?
I have only been here 13 years so that makes me one of the newer members.

Maybe the Austrians always had 10% and OP just never knew? With the inflationary crunch these days...I suppose more overt demands simply are being employed.

Tips may wind up helping the business and not the individual recipient depending on the industry.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if one likes the food/service from the business and you want to keep it alive.

This is speaking as a delivery driver who a nice per order average of tips($6/order) last week but still only made legal min wage because that's how Papa John's rolls.

It might differ for bartenders, waiters, etc. But for pizza drivers, there is no difference getting tipped or not.

Low margin industries like restaurants are in a cutthroat environment. The choice is between a higher upfront nominal cost and the immediate decrease in traffic amongst some potential buyers. Or lower nominal costs and hope the likers of the biz voluntarily pays a premium.

They were small retail locations. You know places where I walk around, pick something up and bring it to a register.

Czechia has had some of the same so that's fun

I see people in Australian/NZ complaining about it as well, how they have started to see it become a standard option on electronic payment devices

My brother drove pizza for years and kept all his tips.

I keep them all too but the on-the-road hourly pay basically results in getting min wage regardless. The savings are basically to the company. Buyer pays premium by tipping, employer has to pay out less to driver because tips, employee gets the same 15 dollars an hour plus mileage compensation.

My current place is mostly credit card, so everything goes into the bank

He got minimum wage, plus tips, no mileage, a small per delivery fee adder. He was not compensated like a tipped employee as waiters are. No way in hell I'd put the wear and tear on my vehicle if the business dropped my pay for tips.

No way I'd put the war and tear on my vehicle or pay the extra fuel, or higher insurance premiums.

You want me to deliver your slop, you provide a vehicle.
