YATT - Tip the maid?

Hello folks.

I just got back from a painful trip to ATL to watch my Bucs get smacked around by the Falcons, but that's another thread.

It's sort of a yearly pilgrimage for my immediate family, my mother, father, sister, her roomate, and nephew go, and have been for 4 years. I;ve tagged along for the last two.

Here's my question: Do you tip your maid? I'm talking Hilton, Hampton Inn, etc..

My parents and sister tip $5.00 per day, I don't see the reason.

Now I am normally a 20% + tipper in restaurants and such - but don't see the reason for tipping maids.

Am I wrong?

Depends. Usually I put up the DND sign so they don't come in at all, so they don't do much during my stay. I'll leave em $5 total no matter how long I'm there, but if I do let them do their thing, yeah I'll tip per day. It's nice coming back to a room with a bed all made up, clean towels that aren't still damp, things like that. Plus you can leave clothing for them to take off and launder (usually free or cheap), they clean up after your meals, stuff like that. They make next to nothing usually, so a little extra is always nice if they do a good job.

No. I'm a single guy and very clean and neat. They barely have to do anything.

If you are a family of people, always needing towels, leaving water on the floor, asking for all kinds of extra crap, then yes you should leave a tip.

Geez I love Australia....none of this tipping BS.....you pay for your food/service and thats it end of transaction.

I voted no....however I have left a tip on a couple of occaisions when something was spilled on the floor (pop/beer/salsa/cheese dip/etc) that would be a pain to clean up... and if there was a bigger mess than normal. (lots of garbage from carryout containers, misc equipment packaging etc.).

I've been to a couple of hotels (non-major-chain) where they have tip envelopes in the rooms.

I know it's been debated here 100's of times... but I don't see why people "have" to tip.

Charge me a little more for the service/product/etc and pay the help well.

I don't tip the teller at the bank, and they've probably done more for me over the years than waitstaff has.

I put the DND sign on the door for the whole trip, so no. If I need towels or something before my trip is up, I'll call the desk and request them, then leave a tip when I check out.

I leave about $2 / day when I travel, usually.

I am sorry to say i have never tipped a hotel maid before simply because none of them have ever went "above and beyond" in any capacity. If they ever did, of course i would tip them.

However, any time we are on a cruise, i tip our cabin steward a lot simply because they do a lot. They could be considered the room maid but they do more (in my opinion anyways)

That's the ting - I don't see why I shoud tip them for simply doing the base job they are hired to do. They dont male 2.10/hour like a server, and can't see how they do anything special to deserve the tip.

I tip if I'm on a business trip and it will be reimbursed.

Otherwise no.
