Ah, so you're a Mac owner.

yup a powerbook... but my pc is in a lian li v1000 case.

i'm also a huge fan of all things indie.
That explains it perfectly. You're willing to pay more for style over performance and reliability.

harm = time and energy spent.

also, i've driven in many of the cars that i am avoiding buying. EVERYONE'S got one... it's hard not to have driven in a honda or a toyota or a chevy or ford or whatever.

also, those cars don't have any personality. they're as vanilla as can be. i'm also not into car customization or any of that "xtreme" bullshit.

i like my cars, computers, etc. to be sleak, stylish, and not overplayed.

Funny... Around here, EVERYONE has an Audi A4. They're like Honda Civics here, and you'll see two or three of them in every parking lot. Damn yuppies around here have more money than they know what to do with

not even. i'm willing to pay a little more for performance and reliability if it's got style and fits me.

the car that fit me the best was the passat... my beloved passat i wish i had enough money to go towards another one...

you are going to get either car inspected first right? it's well worth the money to find what might be a major problem before you invest 8 grand.

no, find a mechanic you trust or comes with good references and call them and setup an appointment. tell them you want to get a car you are looking to buy inspected. they'll go through it and let you know about any problems that the car might have. especially if you have a "loud" engine and pulsing brakes.

well, my friend who works on cars as a hobby came with me, but he doesn't know much about european cars.

he said that the brakes thing would be an easy/inexpensive fix... it's not something serious like an engine or transmission issue.

I have an S80 and I have had nothing but problems with it. Volvos are nice, but they break a LOT IMHO.

My general experience with Volvo: Engine runs forever but the rest of the car falls apart.

I drive a 2000 Volvo s40 with all the options and bought it used almost two years ago.

It's a blast to drive and I don't like to drive much.
I haven't had any problems with it yet, just the usual tune-up. Have to get it inspected yearly in pennsylvania.

what year and model?
Any 200/700 series.

I'd say it applies to the 850's as well.

I'd probably go for the S40 ... The other car (A4) would cost $$ annually to maintain almost definitely.

i'm hoping that part was a joke and not a major buying factor?

good sound is important to me. i don't want to have to deal with getting new speakers soon after i buy the car.

If you plan on ever upgrading your sound system you will pretty much have to replace everything to get it to sound right. Bose builds custom equalization for their speakers directly into their head units and amplifiers including strange things like reversing polarity in some cases for individual speakers. This makes upgrading individual components difficult.
