Spontaneously wanted to go somewhere to get some alone time with my girl and she's been quite adamant about Montauk, NY. We live in NYC so its not that far off - the only problem is that we want to go from May 25 - 27 (MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND).

I know I know, last minute planning at a spot like Montauk for Memorial Day weekend must be impossible, but that is why I need YOUR help OT! I've checked all the obvious high-class hotel/oceanside places but we're on a budget and just want a nice place to shack up for 2 nights

- need lodging in Montauk, NY area (hotel / a nice motel) with reasonable rates
- will provide pics of said girl in a bit

Have you looked into bed and breakfasts? They are perfect for a weekend stay and many have reasonable prices. Not sure what's available as far as those go in Montauk. I live up near Poughkeepsie but I've got relatives on LI so I'm a little familiar with it.

EDIT: Quick Google found this one

My google searching keeps leading me to ocean side hotels and the same 3 places pop up!

But your suggestion is quite good, I'll look more into it

I had my wedding reception outside of Montauk at Gurney's Inn and just love that area. The beaches are fantastic and the the towns are really nice. I try to make it out at least three times a year to see my wife's family and go for a swim and a tan.

That being said, it's absolutely terrible out there for hotels, especially during the start of the summer season. I'm not sure if you are going to find anything reasonable that's not out in Riverhead or farther. The vast majority of hotels in Montauk are usually solidly booked, over $200 a night and not on any online site. Try online yellow pages or the chamber of commerce.

There is a camping spot in Hither Hills which is only $24 a night and they have availability still ... of course you're in a tent. But you do get showers, indoor toilet ... and camping can be fun too. The beach is actually very nice and one of the few beaches that have public parking.

Also, remember if you do go, to allot quite a bit of time for traveling. It's usually bumper-to-bumper starting Thursday all the way until Tuesday on long weekends.

Good luck!

no Holiday Inns or more widely available chain hotels around that area?

Its like I'm heading into the Village of the Corn or something!

you can always go to Block Island instead. There is a ferry from Montauk. I stayed at the Gothic Inn two years ago w/my gf. It was the cheapest B&B I could find. BI is really nice, BTW.

It's pretty much mom and pop shops and expensive resorts. All the hotel chains are zoned for Riverhead and below ... and even they jack their rates during the summer.
