how much protein does 1 "serving" of a protein shake give you? how many servings in a 3 lb bag?
im a 17 y/o male looking to build up for lacrosse next year. i dont have a job so i cant buy my own stuff. my mom thinks buying protein mix is just advertising getting to me (yet my oldest brother has seen its benefits)
i just wanted to find the stats for comparison reasons.

thanks all

A 5lb tub of protein powder is roughly 75 servings so a 3lb one would probably be around 45 servings. I think the Optimum Nutrition whey I use has 21 or 22g of protein per serving.

In the low 20s per serving, depending on brand. Unless you eat like a horse, and mainly meat, you'll have a hard time getting enough protein without benefit of shakes. Mixing them with a cup of milk instead of water is an easy way to add 8 more grams and a few carbs as well. Your mom, like most mothers, is wrong. If anyone is the victim of advertising, it's likely her, roaming the grocery store getting low-fat stuff which has 2x the carbs, falling for the low carb craze and paying twice as much for stuff that didn't have carbs anyway but now advertises it with a sticker, etc. Considering the stuff fills you up like a small meal for around $0.50 a serving, and is one of the most basic & important supplements for building muscle, you can't go wrong.

Isopure Zero Carb is listed at 50g's of protein per serving. A serving being two scoops of product in 12 ounces of water. Use milk instead and you've upped it even more. I've used it and think it's a good product. A 3lb jug will run you about $32 to $35 delivered.

Personally use ON whey, it's about $22 for a 5lb jug. Most people can't (and don't need to) absorb more than about 50g of protein at a time anyway.

1) it varries from brand to brand. I use ON's protein, 10lb bag for 45 bucks or so. I think there is something like 25g protein per serving, I usually do 3 shakes with 3-4 servings in each shake daily, the bag lasts me a month.

2) your mom is dumb.

www.bodybuilding.com for all your supplement needs. they also have an excellent forum

Well now that the cat's out of the bag, I have to agree. No offense intended or anything, my own parents are utterly retarded as well - just being honest.

I get it from people all the time. Anyone that comes over to my place and sees my supplements sitting out think's im crazy. Then they go on to tell me how they don't work, or how it will destory my kidneys or something of the like.

Do your own research, try what you want, when you find something that works, stick with it. Me? I've tried so many different supplements it's unreal, but I've come to the conclusion that the only things that are worth spending money on are:

glutamine - prolab
protein - on
creatine - i mix it up, right now i have higher power, prolabs and some celltech
multi's - gnc megaman

Go to bodybuilding.com and order a 10lb bag of ON protein and a 1000g tub of glutamine (should be 70 bucks or so). The protein will last you 2 months probably, maybe more or less depending on how often you take it. I've had a 1000g tub of glutamine for about 3 months and am finally starting to get past halfway on it, it's recommened you take 5-10g of it daily, I take 20-25g daily and it's lasted me that long

If you don't know, glutamine is for muscle regen, endurance and prevents muscle breakdown among other things. With high amounts daily, it's unreal. Try protein alone for a month, then try glutamine and protein and you'll know exactly what i'm talking about.

Yeah, entirely worth it and legitimate. I have a friend with a classic case of stick syndrome - guy's 6'2" and weighed 150 for the longest time despite eating $20 worth of fast food daily and never lifting a finger.. got him started on protein & lifting (I needed a spotter ) and he's pushing 180 now.

Depends on the product. Some have as little as 15g per serving, and some as many as 27g. Some servings are bigger than others. And depends how many serving size you actually have in a single serving (i use 2-3).

And if all you're going to do is use a single protein shake after every workout... don't bother. It won't make even the slightest difference. If you want to really have the benefit of protein supplements, get a couple of 10lb bags/tubs of protein... taking them at the minimum 3 times per day (5 or more would be best... first thing in the morning, another one between breakfast and lunch, another between lunch and dinner, another after workout, and another just before bed).

Agree sorta - you do need to 'bathe' your system in protein; consuming one shake a day won't help much if your other meals are few & far between, and consist of mostly carbs. You should ingest at least 20g of protein every three hours or so during the ~16 hours you're awake each day (assuming you're not a raging insomniac like me) if you want to pack on any muscle. It doesn't have to come from shakes though; there are many food protein sources.

i dont get the chance to eat often during the day (though with summer coming up it'll be much easier to get food).
my parents are very strict. im not allowed to be driven by other kids my age (hell, even my gf.. i dunno wtf is up with that.. i dont have my license yet, its coming in early july). they also work long hours.. dad puts in a 10-12 hour day 5 days a week, and mom is a teacher.

but anyway, yeah with summer i'll be able to get the small, protein packed meals. or at least try to.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 16 and a bunch of my friends have begun working out. At first I was reluctant since they started taking protein, I thought they were going to stunt their growth or something. Now it's been a week and they are getting buff and I'm still weak as a twig. I'm going to start lifting and drinking these protein drinks I guess. Right now I'm about 6' 2" and 170 pounds, I eat so much fatty food I am surprised I'm not a complete fat ass (literally my diet consists of mcdonalds and Celeste Pizzas). I've never benched in my life and I'm going to the YMCA tommorow to start. Can I get buff by the end of the summer?

Buff? No. Physical changes that you can see and feel? Absolutely! But, ain't gonna happen without a ccomplete change of diet, a dedicated exercise program, and those protein supplements.

Yep, takes time. Dunno where he came up with stunted growth either ;p half the food you eat has protein in it, shakes just are a convenient way to get it, and a nice break in flavor from all the meats and such you normally have to eat to get enough.

As far as wanting to get 'buff' by the end of summer, depends what you consider buff. I'd say aiming to gain 10 lbs of lean muscle by September would be a pretty good goal, achievable without hiring Ahnahld as a personal trainer and spending 8 hours a day in the gym. If you end up enjoying it and are serious about nutrition you could gain even more.
