I'm trying to decide if I should get one of the first generation 970 Macs. I have a TiBook that I love and a Quicksilver G4. I guess I could replace my mom's iMac with my G4 tower, sell the iMac, and get myself the new 970 machine.....

My only issue is, I never like buying first generation CPUs. I always figure that the first batch has the most issues in them and they're fixed in subsequent chip releases....same thing with motherboards.

This new architecture that they're using is so drastically faster and stronger than anything else they've ever produced, I can't see how every Mac power user wouldn't want one!

Which iMac does she have? Does she really need a new computer? Would she even care? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I probably wouldn't buy the first generation 970 either. My 1 GHz TiBook and Celeron 1.4 GHz Tualatin desktop should suffice for now (along with my P4 1.6 at work).

Mind you, if in 2004 they release a 970 AluBook, I'd be VERY tempted...

I share the same peripherals with my Mac and PC (via Firewire).
I'm not talking about firewire, I'm talking about AGP/PCI/SATA etc.

as has been said 10000000x before their market doesn't require expansion
And obviously 97% of the world is different to "their market".

Get out much? I just came from Harvard University some weeks back with an instructor. 97% of their systems in the science research labs were Powered by Apple. Also went to Berklee college of music, over 200 systems and were all powered by Apple Macs. We had a graphics show which had various software companies from Adobe and Corel product, CAD, to Vector base. Almost 99% of the systems were powered by Apple. The only PC's there were ones sitting on the show floor that no one gave any notice to. (Not exactly fun looking at BSOD's when you're trying to render a demo for an audience) Whether you like it or not. Apple's systems are being used by acedemic and A/V production studio departments worldwide. As long as they have a market, the Macintosh advancements will continue.

If you have very little interest in Macs, why post in the thread?

MS produced some of their keyboards with a USB hub built in(the Internet Pro, and Natural Pro come to mind), but they've since been discontinued, although strangely enough, not their non-Pro versions.

Well, she has a 600MHz G3 iMac. She's happy with it, but she say's its gradually getting slower. It's a few years old at this point and since I'm not there to do anything to it, it will probably continually get slower. She's gonna send it to me via FedEx in a couple of weeks so I can take a look at it and clean it up. You have to understand, she's very afraid of doing much she's not aware of to the machine. She uses AOL and when she's called them for support, they've had her delete preferences and control panels they shouldn't touch (in her 9 days), so she doesn't do much tinkering.

I know I walked her through an OS 10.2 install over the phone, but I'll bet she's still at 10.2.0 because she probably won't touch the software update capabilities of the system.

I guess its party because I have 3 G4 based machines and she's got the iMac....I just don't quite feel bad enough to give her a 970 instead.... ;-)

Actually GUIs and mice weren't Apple. The first GUI apple sold en masse was design by Xerox PARC, and the mouse along with it.

But Xerox PARC had Steve Jobs in to see their technology, and the Xerox execs wouldn't fund mass marketting the first computer that PARC tried to put out, so Steve Jobs took the idea with him to Apple where they mass deployed it because Xerox wouldn't.

Now that has nothing to do with this thread at all. I'm glad to see Apple is going for some serious computing power. The PPC970 is one to look out for. I don't see myself ever owning one, I'm just not a Mac guy, but it still looks like a sweet piece of HW. Go Apple

I tried to use a mac recently, I really did. I could not figure out where to click. I have nothing against 1 button mice or the OS; I was lost. Even the puzzle would have been nice. As far as the solidarity of the OS, I've been running versions of Windows for awhile now. Most of the problems are a result of a dumb user. XP is impossible for me to crash unless I try an overclock that's a bit much. 98 isn't as kind. After reading the 10 reasons to switch, I won't. Those are the dumbest reasons I can think of. "Because it works." No, I know kids that have lost data using mac OS. I have never lost anything. Flame on

didnt know M$ put out a keyboard with a USB hub... why doesnt everyon PC keyboard do that? why did they discontinue it? Why plug you mouse and PDA or whatever all the way around the back when you can easily have it plug into your desktop keyboard? odd... They seem to be phasing that out on mac compatible keyboards too as most 3rd party USB keyboards are mac and PC compatible.

as for the first gen PPC970 systems... I know alot of antsy people getting their bankroll ready for a new top of the line PPC970 dual proc system. For me I never buy first gen anything for mission critical stuff. Software too. I'll alwyas wait till they release a few patches. Especially with PC software. PC 1.0 version software is basically still beta in my eyes.

Go3iverson:
I can't imagine a imac 600mhz G3 is not fast enough for your mom who may just be surfing and using Office. I still do alot of photoshop/illustrator/quark design work on a G3 350 running OS 9.2.2. Then again in X, the graphical demands on a Rage 16mb card may be a bit much. She may be getting small delays here and there in the graphics.

and yea Noriaki, I didnt say Apple invented that stuff, just brought it to the consumer. Xerox PARC basically invented everything. Too bad the idiotic powers that be over there never realized how much gold they had. Think about it. They basically invented the personal computer, ethernet LANs, GUI, etc etc etc. If the management at xerox had any openminded foresight at all, that company would be the richest company in the world 10x over. They could have been HP, Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, and more all wrapped into one company.... they had world domination at their fingertips lol

I'm sure that the machine fits her needs, I just think it needs some sprucing up with some updates and optimization. Erasing the drive and starting over may be a nice idea, as well. I just wish she'd get Cable or DSL and ditch the dial up...
