wellllllll if this is 20% off, i think students or UT students or someone gets Dell discount somehow by going to site from school... i forgot how i got to it oneday.... well anyway... those student type people could combine the 20% thing (what it is has yet to be revealed to me and so I still have my nickel) and that could be a descent deal.

Or you can do this and combine it with ebates.com and purchase a refurb and get a good % off on tainted goods.

Or you could work there and get a deal that beats this.... either with employee discount, or disgruntled-employee-steals-machine.

Get the new Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop or Dell Dimension 4100 desktop. Those give you the best bang for your buck IMHO.

Hey da bastard

I was wondering about the UT student savings as well. I remember that the College of Natural Science had a special discount last year on their web page but now it's gone. Been trying to look for it but no luck. Lemme know if you find it. Oh, turn on your private messaging.

Oh, I've seen that one. The one from last year was different. You first had to login with name and e-mail and then you are taken to a special Dell website with 4-5 package options.

As for the above link. It's weird cause prices for identical configurations come out more expensive than just going to Dell.com > Home/Home Office.

Yeah I remeber that too. I used to accidently get there when I was trying to get to career services or something.

This really sux. From that page the laptop I want is $2100 with 14" celery 600, 32 meg ram, dvd, 10 gig, ethernet

so that would be

(2100 * .8) * .99 = 1663.20 and Id still have to buy more ram since it only would have 32.

Wow, thats exactly half what my prudent investing is losing on Dell and twice what I made on it last year.... *goes into the corner and cries mummbling to himself "But its a good company, just because it isnt growning as much doesnt meant the stock should drop half of it value. You are all wrong. Its a good company. It is."*

EDITED: WTF? Its more expensive? Yes we college kids are the wealthy ones, let me tell you... I always have the finest Wendy's napkins on my table.

EDIT (part II): I enabled the messaging thing, whatever that does.

EDITED: All i want is a laptop that can play DVDs and Quake 3, with a +6 gig HD and an ethernet card. I wish I didnt have to get a modem, floppy drive, or software.

EDITED: SWEEET I went from the 3000 to 5000 under edu discount, upgrade video card and screen but took away ethernet and it dropped to $1842, so that drops to $1458 if you can get ebates and passport to work and passport is a check and not a crappy GC

Yeah, a laptop with good 3D acceleration is hard to come by. I was originally going to wait until they start using the GeForce 2 Go chipsets. FAQ If this deal goes through though, ATI Rage 128 will have to do.

Oh my god! Talk about stabbing someone in the back. Dell has got to be smoking some good stuff to be charging these prices! Someone's butt must hurt bad!

It's better off to go to their normal page to buy stuff. Or go to a retail outlet, like staples or office max.

Anyone know if the CPU on the Dell notebooks are BGA2 or MPGA2? For those that don't know, BGA2 moblile PIII are the versions that get soldered onto the board itself. MPGA2 ones are the ones that are socketable.

Also how does the multiplier work? Speedstep lowers the multiplier so the lower ones should be unlocked... what about the higher ones? Even though overclocking a notebook is really risky considering how hot they already get, I think I'd rather o/c the multiplier than the FSB.

As for deals, I think the 5000e R700UW series with the Ultra XGA TFT screen is a great system for those that sorta want a nice screen. 15 inches (geez one of my desktop monitors are only 14 inches) 1600x1200 144% more pixels than XGA displays. HDD - 10GB, I'd drop the memory to 64MB as I think it's probably cheaper to go buy your own module and upgrading it yourself.

This is what I'm considering:

Inspiron 5000e R700UW

- PIII 600MHz (multiplier free? )
- 64MB RAM (buy upgrade elsewhere for cheaper)
- ATi RAGE Mobility 16MB
- 10GB HDD (sounds sufficient for W2K and other apps for at least my college career. WinME lisense refundable?)
- 8X DVD ($100 value for FREE - firmware hackable to be RCP1?)
- Int. V.90 (softmodem prolly)

$2,428 (w/100 off promo)
$2,428 - 20% = $2,023.33 w/free shipping

Acedemic Price:

$2,395.95
$2,395.95 - 20% = $1,916.76 w/free shipping (?)

The rest look like to me just simple software add-ons. Should I consider an extra battery?

Thats almost the same thing i was looking at through the .edu link but I had a 600 celeron and no modem but my price before 20% was 1842.

whats this $100 off thing? it on all laptops?

Also what do you mean about the hackable DVD? what does the hack do?

I may have to sell some loser stock to buy this waste of money and time yet.

the hackable thing was refering to the Regional Locking on DVD-ROMs. Basically prevents you from playing DVDs other than the region it's set to (for most of us, Region 1). If the firmware is RCP1 (aka region free), you can play any type of DVD.

Just wondering... Are the notebook Celerons running at 66MHz FSB or 100MHz FSB?

one reason i was looking at the celeron was because i heard it ate less power so youd have a longer battery life.... but then if i was concerned of battery life, i guess i should op for smaller screen...

I am on a celeron 458 desktop right now so the celeron 600 wouldnt bother me too badly... i know it wont be as fast as a desktop celeron 600 but ihtink itd still be better than my current one.

i think both Celerons and PIIIs have the same voltage requirement.
yes, the screen size does matter.
and with speedstep the PIIIs should do better if battery is your concern

Thanks for the tip.... yes battery is a concern, but i still rather have a 15"....

I read somewhere that people recommended celeron because it ate less power for one reason or another.

Well, id prolly go see if i could see anything at the dell factory outlet thing in town to see if i could see something similar to what i cant afford if i somehow thought i could.

THanks for the help...anyone ever find out if this deal was a GC or a check for sure?

If you're concerned about battery life get the Mobile Pentium III - 600 it uses 1.35v/speedstep 1.10v compared to the 650-850 chips which use 1.60v/speedstep 1.35v. Not only will it use less power... the chip will run cooler too which is a great thing considering how hot notebooks get on your lap! For those that are interested, the Mobile Celeron 600 uses a constant 1.60v. The C600 btw, is based on the PIII core with it's cache slashed. If it's anything like it's desktop couterpart, performance should be flaky compared to the PIII

I called Dell to ask about the GC/check confusion. When I got to a live person, he told me that the Sales Dept (who would know about the MSN promotion) would open at 7 am Central time.

For those of you awake at that time: 800.915.3355

Here's what dasnufus posted in this FatWallet thread. Brace yourself, it's not good news.

<< More conflicting news with Dell's 20% gift certif.
I've just spoken to Damon on the live online help @msn. The rep says its a mistake, its not a 20% check as listed in the popup window, but a 20% gift certif.

Here's the transcript:
Damon: Hello james, how may I help you
today?
james: HI Damon, I have a question on dell's
20% gift Certif?
Damon: Okay, what is your question please?

james: the pop-up window says its a check
for 20% of the purchase price, but its listed
under 20% gift certif? Can you tell me which
one it is?
Damon: Okay, one moment while I check
into this matter for you.
james: okay
Damon: I'll be with you in a moment...
Damon: james, the pop up window states
that you will receive a check for 20% back of
your purchase. The check they are referring
to is a gift certificate. For some reason they
have worded it to say check, which may
confuse some customers. We are currently
relaying this message to management to
have the problem corrected.
james: okay thankyou very much
Damon: Thank you for visiting "MSN eShop"
and shopping online. If you desire further
assistance navigating through our site, please
let us know. 050

I am now disapointed....

I'm still on hold on Dell's CS line. They didn't even know about the MSN thing. Anyway, just got off the live help @msn. Here's what i got... rather fuzzy but might as well share my experience.

-----
Dana: Hello root, how may I help you today?
root: good morning
root: could you verify something for me please?
root: it says here that Dell4me is under the 20% gc program. but when i click on it it says something else (e.g. 20% check instead of GC) could you clarify this for me please?
Dana: Sure, what do you need?
Dana: The merchant has reached their sanctioned quota and will not be part of our promotion.
root: already? that was quick
root: even so, could you just clarify if it was a 20% check or 20% gift certificate?
Dana: I'm sorry, I can give you a list of current merchants.
Dana: Thank you for your inquiry. Please Click here! to view your selection.
root: dell is still listed<g>
root: Thanks anyway. Have a nice day.

<<<< addendum >>>>

Just got off the phone with Stacey (CS@Dell - friendly too!), she said this is purely a Microsoft thing and that the check or GC is sent out by MS and not Dell so they really have no way (for now) to verify what MSN will send out.

Then again, if what the CS at MSN said about Dell reaching their quota, either way it's worthless now ((
