Just talked to a Dell Internet Rep and he said the 20% discount begins on the 29th, supposedly msn jumped the gun

He also said there would probably be a better promotion on the Inspiron notebooks then too

Dunno how accurate that is but that's the word from Dell

I got a IBM PIII 500 this Summer for about $2000. Then I suddenly find there are lots of deals on notebook computers. My words is unless you really need it, do not buy even there seems to be too good a deal on laptop.

Darn I just ordered a computer for a cousin of mine last week (17th) from Dell. They just came out with the free DVD-Rom upgrade, so I called in to get in on that deal... but i'm tempted to cancel(since it hasn't been shipped yet) and reorder...

the only thing that's holding me back is that i'm afraid i'll lose the free shipping promo i got with it last week(that's another $90). oh well...

If what payton said regarding dell CSR statement is correct then it would not so hot then coz, all Dell special offer will end at 11/28 meanwhile MSN deal will start at 11/29 ??
Now DELL got : free dvd upgrade, free ground shipping for notebook, and $100 off (AOL 1 year free but since AOL is suck I will just cancel it ) it's all cost around 275~300 bucks + ebates 1%.
Well i just ordered I5Ke from them this morning, if the MSN deal start before 11/28 I will just cancel my order and order again.

Yuniverse: do you know that dell have 30 days pricing policy, if you bought the system from them and then in 30 days after your shipping date the price is reduced then you can ask the get deduction, dunno if the promotion include tho...

i wish i knew back in march that dell had 30 day price protection... coulda saved a bit of dough...

that student thing is crap. even if you get the password protected site it is crap because it makes you get office and other crap which we UT students don't need because of the $5 thing.

Anybody out there who was able to order using the MSN passport at Dell...how do you know that you're getting the 20% GC? Did they give you a confirmation email or anything?
My home comp wouldn't even show the MSN passport during check out at Dell but my office comp did so I ordered thru it...I'm wondering if my order will be processed with the 20%GC????

OK all you skeptics!

How do you like this, eh???

STRAIGHT FROM DELL'S PAGE (when you follow the link from the MSN page):

**Attention
MSN Holiday Shopper! For shopping MSN eShop and using your Passport Wallet in Dell's checkout, you'll get 20% cash back from your system order when completed online! (Current price does not reflect the rebate, which will follow in the mail 8 to 10 weeks after your system ships.)

**A 20% cash rebate will be issued to qualified Dell Home Systems purchasers based on total transaction amount, including taxes and shipping. Rebate maximum is $500. The rebate check will be mailed to qualified purchaser?s bill-to address, as provided in Dell?s online checkout. Due to processing time, purchaser should allow 8 to 10 weeks before check is received. Customer is disqualified and will not receive rebate if product is returned. Offer good only for online system purchases made through Dell Home Systems between November 17 and December 20, 2000, for customers who came to Dell.com through a link on the MSN network and used their Microsoft Passport Wallet data in Dell?s checkout process. Purchaser must meet the eligibility requirements set forth by MSN as posted on their website at http://www.eshop.com/softcontent/softcontent.asp?scmId=587.

I had a good feeling about this one all along. Way to go Dell and MSN!!!

not sure about your question but you should opt for 64MB instead of 96MB. buy the extras somewhere else that will save you some $
btw, has anyone noticed the Toshiba Satellite 2805-S201 @ mercata?
it is about $1150 after MSN20%+Mercata$($100)+ebates(5%) i think that one is even a better choice comparing to the cel machines from Dell.

============================================================
Toshiba Satellite
Pros:
All-in-one design
8X DVD-ROM
S3/Savage 8MB Video(i read somewhere that this chip is better than ATi's)
2USBs
both 56K and NIC
better speakers

Cons:
heavier than Dell Insipron 4000
drives are fixed so not as upgradable as Dell's(no hot swapping, of course)
shorter battery life
smaller screen (13.3&quot
============================================================

============================================================
Dell Insipron 4000
Pros:
looks a bit nicer
weight less and smaller
hot swapable
8X DVD-ROM
Longer battery life
bigger screen

Cons:
1USB
no NIC(optional)
so-so speakers
============================================================

what do you guys think???

Cool, so the dell notebook I bought 3 weeks ago can be returned right ? and I can get a new one via this promotion right ?
I'm thinking about the Inspiron 4000 ( $1449 - 20% = $1159 shipped )

I guess that CSR was wrong, ordered the Inspiron 4000 myself

got 128mb ram from crucial for around $100, just get 64mb from dell and buy your ram somewhere else

Yeah ordered today. Expecting the rebate check... by the time it does come though, it'll be too late for you guys to jump on the deal. I say you guys should just jump on the deal. It's Dell and Microsoft... the check should definitely be coming. It says right there on the site, 20% cash back... don't straddle the fence. Jump on this...

I helped a friend order a Dimension L system Monday before the MSN offer started. There was free shipping at the time. Then I found out about the MSN thing on Tuesday. My friend called then and asked to see if she could get the discount. Too late to get the DVD drive cause the system was shipped, but the CSR gave told her that 20% of the total amount would be credited back to her credit card after all.
whoo!

Just wondering is there another MSN passport button on the last page of the checkout? I clicked the first passport button that filled my order info for me but on the 4th page it still wants me to enter my credit card information and such. Didn't the passport thingy do it for me? Or do I just have to confirm it.

I know I'm sounding kinda edgy but 20% off is a lot!

You have to use msn eshopfirst then click the link for dell4me then there is a pop up window and click the shop at dell then shop as usual. When checkout use MSN passport express.

Just wondering for those that are buying Inspiron 5000e notebooks... besides for high end mobile graphic design, why would anyone want to get a Ultra XGA screen that does 1600x1200? Wouldn't that put a HUGE strain on your eyes considering how small things will at that resolution on a 15 inch display? Also, If I'm correct the dot pitch on LCDs aren't as great as your common CRT monitor. Wouldn't that make text "fuzzy" as well at that resolution?

Super XGA does 1400x1050 which is probably more than suffiecient for most users. Heck I can't even anything above 1024x768 on a 15 inch screen!

For those that are getting the 5000e, make sure to get 16MB video if you're a fps gamer. The 8MB video has only a 64-bit memory bus while 16MB has a 128-bit memory bus. Funny... the 16MB ATi RAGE Mobility 128 can outperform a TNT2 32MB in Unreal Tourney.

AnandTech ATi RAGE Mobility 128 Review

Also found out that the 8000 series is using a slightly modified i815e desktop chipset. Speedstep is still supported, but instead of the chipset supporting it, the BIOS does. Dell can't put SpeedStep on listing because it really isn't the "real thing".

I wonder... 600MHz mobile PIII CPU... raise voltage from 1.35v to the 1.6v in which the 700-850 mobile PIIIs use (some variants)... change the bus to 133MHz via softfsb. Safer overclocking considering you're only making the CPU run faster? Knowing Dell their memory modules are usually fairly high quality... should be able to take up 133MHz. The rest will be running within spec. Hope I get a mPGA2 PC0 stepping mobile PIII-600! =D
