It's limited to only the Inspiron 3800 and 5000e. I modified my post about it, so check it and see if it works. I subsequently cancelled my order because I wanted the 8000 instead.

If you live in the following states, you have to pay tax when purchasing from Dell:

Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida or Nevada

Sidenote... Rarely do us Californians come across a good e-tailer that you don't have to pay tax with. I like Dell for this... They better not setup shop in California in the near future!

No idea about the quality on the Dell cases they sell. Compgeeks sells a Dell notebook case for under 10 bucks (use 10% MC discount). Guess it's good if you don't mind it being used.

I'd get a 3 year warranty. Unlike desktop hardware, notebook hardware can be very expensive to replace if something goes wrong.

Considering the miniPCI NIC is 3Com based, it should work fine in Linux as most 3Com NICs are supported by the kernel.

Life with speedstep is around 3-3.5 hours depending on use... so I hear. For screen size it depends on what you need and do. One thing to consider... larger the screen, the more power it takes to operate.

">terms</a>, 2. states that it is the discretion of the merchant as to exactly what form of discount you get, it also says &quot;gift certificate or check.&quot; seems clear enough that the terms say it is up to the merchant exactly what you get back, and dell is pretty clear about &quot;cash rebate&quot; on their site. i'm not worried that it will be a GC instead of a rebate.

I'm not sure when you bought your computer from Dell, but when I bought my Inspiron 3200 2 years ago, I had to pay heavy tax to get it shipped here to California. Perhaps you got lucky, perhaps I'm unlucky.. oh well.. hopefully they don't charge tax anymore then I could get this deal also. Anyone recently buy their computer from Dell have to pay tax to California?

I'm from Cali and I just ordered my 8000 and it only charged me $26 is taxes on $2400.

Buy the thing man. It's way cheap and it's cheaper than company discount from other companies.

Oh yeah, did anyone get a receipt or anything from dell in their email? I ordered last night and still haven't recieved a confirmation email.

Dell only charges tax for the on-site warranty coverage (since it's based in your state). Tax on the notebook itself isn't charged.

Most of us only got charged between 20 to 30 in tax. If the whole price was charged tax... you'd be giving 150-200 bucks to your local state gov't.

Well, I'm still debating, two hours to go--maybe I'll get lucky and someone can answer my last few questions:

What is Dell's return policy? 30 days satisfaction guaranteed? Do I pay return shipping? How much would that be for a laptop (I'm in NY, where do they ship from?)?

Is the 5000e &quot;older tech&quot; than the 4000? Right now I'm debating between the monitor sizes: 14&quot; on the 4000, or 15&quot; SXGA and a floppy on the 5000 for $130 more. Will I get much more battery life on the 4000 over the 5000's bigger screen (batt. optimized mode, of course)?

I didn't order any support with my Inspiron 3200 2 years ago. Instead I payed $200+ in taxes for the laptop alone... so you see why I am skeptical. I have not had any good experiences with Dell to talk about... so I am wary on this deal.
