Hmm for the 8000 series, they have the 32mb version of the ATI card. Is that alot better then the 16mb or will I just be wasting my money?

Thanks

Hi, a little help here.
I need to figure out a way to make all of these discounts work. The 20% thing doesn't show up when I go through the educational systems.

1. The 20% passport
2. Purchasing an educational staff system (since it is cheaper then the home versions)
3. Online (so I get the 100 off thing)
4. any other ebates or whatever discounts you know about.

Thanks.

The 20% only applies to their Home and Home Office section. States so in the terms on the bottom of the page. Would have loved to get that additional acedemic discount though! =D

The 8000 series uses a AGP 4x ATi Mobility M4. Uses a dual pipeline architecture. Supposedly should give about 2.5-4 times more performance than the original ATi Mobility (M1 or Mobility 128?). The M4 allows the user to hook up up to three displays!

If the chip is anything like the ATi RAGE Mobility 128, you'll want at least 16MB to take use of the full 128-bit memory bus as the M4 like the Mobility 128 has 8MB embedded on the BGA, allowing expansion to 16MB or 32MB (max).

I did some very extensive research on the hardware that's included in the 5000e and 8000, so if you want to know some more, I'll answer what I can.

What is the proper procedure for getting 20% from MSN and the 1% from ebates? What order do I need to visit the sites?

This deal is awesome.
I bought an Inspiron 4000 just barely a month ago...I had some dead pixels in the lcd so I decided to return it. Well, I'm glad I did cuz the price went down like $150-$200 with the free DVD drive, the $100 off and Free shipping...add the 20% MSN Passport GC/Refund and this is definitely a very hot deal.
I was able to upgrade fm a P3 600 mhz cpu to a P3 800 mhz for the same price. Woohoo!!!
The refund or GC, what ever it is, fm MSN Passport will help me upgrade this baby some more.Another Woohoo for that!!!!!

Dell's price on their memory is way too high so just get the minimum and buy fm somewhere else...like Crucial which has a free second day shipping at this time.

moks78 - You got a super sweet deal because of the price drop, the current 20% off offer and upgrading to a faster P3/800.

Other than the dead pixels how is the build quality of the Inspiron 4000?

Any idea if there are problems with ordering 2 laptops (1 per order)? Any limitations from MSN or Dell rebates/etc?

RossMan,

The Inspiron 4000 was built good...it feels sturdier than the Sony or Toshiba notebooks that I tested at B&M stores before ordering this one. My only complain abt it are the speakers...they sounded weak during dvd playback...adjusted the volume controls at Win ME and the Win DVD software but it still sounded low.

BTW before I forget, I had problems installing MS Office 97 in the notebook...Access and Powerpoint wouldn't install...my wife's workplace still uses this oldie software.:frown:
Dell Tech support told me that since I ordered only the MS Works Suite 2000, Windows Me or whatever proprietary software in the notebook is not allowing me to install the other programs. They told me to call MS to troubleshoot this problem.:frown:

moks78 - Thanks for your input regarding the notebook. I think when wireless networking in the home advances further or if Bluetooth ever becomes mainstream then I might consider one.

Now if only I had been around when Mercata had that Toshiba P3/700 (128/12DVD) notebook for $1200 then I would have snatched that up in a heart beat ...

Considering the current Inspiron deals (free DVD-ROM, $100 off & free shipping), a 20% rebate check would be a pretty sweet deal.

However, if it's a gift certificate for a future Dell purchase, then it's only a warm deal (unless you regularly purchase from Dell; I don't).

Have anyone gotten direct confirmation from MSN which way this one goes? I think considering Dell already has 3 promotions for an Inspiron, they could easily point their finger at MSN after all is said and done if a GC is sent out instead of a "rebate check."

It wouldn't be easy to go to your CC to dispute the transaction because the fine print says something like 8-10 weeks before the check is cut. I don't even need a notebook right now...

heh heh... wishful thinking... doubt it'll happen... but this is what I sent off to Dell...

*********

I know this may sound strange but I was wondering if it would be possible to have my notebook shipped without an operating system, with the final cost of my order re-calculated without the operating system. I plan to install a Linux Operating system on the notebook when I receive it.

I am aware that Dell does not offer any support for 3rd party Operating Systems.

Upon reading Microsoft's End-User License Agreement (EULA), I'm obligated to a refund of the full price of the cost of the operating system if I do not use it or do not agree with the EULA terms. In this case Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition.

Although Dell may require to use WindowsMe to test/burn-in the system. This lisence agreement is for the end-user (in this case me) and can be removed by the OEM (Dell) before shipping.

Ack... probably should have said this in detail much sooner...

For those that are buying the notebooks, opt for the least amount of memory you can get on the notebook. In most cases 64MB x1 DIMM, leaving DIMM slot B free for upgrade. Reason being is that Dell charges around 100 bucks for 128MB x2 DIMMs and 255-300 bucks for 192MB. Well if you buy a 128MB SODIMM SODIMM stick from PriceWatch, it's only a mere 79 + shipping. Why bay 255-300 more for 192 memory when you can get it for only 79 more?! Probably can find it even cheaper as well by finding coupons and such online. The Dell notebooks use a standard 144-pin PC100 SDRAM SODIMM for memory.

i agree about the memory. get the least possible memory they allow, and upgrade with standard 144 pin SODIMM 3.3 v. etc.

also, why is everyone looking at the 4100's? why not the 3800's?

LuZeR - You do realize that the 4100 is a Dell Dimension desktop and the 3800 is the Dell Inspiron notebook, right? I think you meant the Inspiron 3800 vs. 4000?

John - Very nice system esp getting only 64MB RAM. As you already know, you can get RAM elsewhere for a lot cheaper.
