Certainly, Sony has done this for decades with home audio/video components. I mean, how many $5k DVD players did they (expect to) sell?

I would think (again, maybe I give them too much credit) the price is set so the breakeven volume is low. The difference in build quality is astounding but whether that translates into a tangible difference in performance is highly questionable.

Edit: It depends on the interface though. How easy is it to use? If you add an SD does it integrate everything into a single library.

Whew,.. and here I thought they expected the $150K a year plebs to buy this.

At this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sony introduced the Walkman ZX2, a luxury mp3 player that will reportedly retail for $1,199.99, as The Verge points out. Along with the expected features of a modern mp3 player—it has 128GB of storage, uses a touch screen, Bluetooth, and supports Android apps—the selling point is the S-Master HX processor, which enables high-resolution audio.
This feature has earned comparisons to Neil Young's Pono player, which offers a similar high-end listening experience for dedicated audiophiles. According to The Verge, Sony plans to launch the ZX2 in the spring.

Oh, and it's an audio only device.

It makes a big deal of a audio format called FLAC. Which I've heard of, but never used. Of course MP3 is a lossy media format, maybe FLAC isn't. I wouldn't mind listening to it to hear how it "actually" sounds. They should put a Ipod 5 and this side by side playing the same FLAC and have people tell the difference..

Sorry but its Sony label but not a sony. Back in the days Sony meant quality Japanese made electronics. So you want to charge Quality Japanese electronic prices but make it in a 3rd world country using cheap labor.

I wonder if they'd be able to stick the same processor in a phone (or a similar one) to get the same audio quality out of a more useful device. During my iPhone days I still carried around a Cowon mp3 player because the iPhone audio quality was terrible. Phones these days are quite a bit better, especially on the android side where you have different options for media players. Still... a phone that focused more on audio would get my attention.

If that's true then you probably need a in-build headphone amplifier, maybe it has that and that's why its so expensive.
