Yes, but is it better than the Kuro?

I gotta say, I'm disappointed that so far in my research I have not been able to find a TV that beats a Pioneer Kuro across the board. At first I thought it was just marketing hype and fanboy-ism but after checking out a few sets in the stores and seeing them side by side to the latest offerings from 2010, the Kuro still looks the best. Add to that the fact the Pioneer exited the TV business and the disappointment only worsens!

Some people have been saying that 2011 Panasonic plasmas will have the same tech that Kuro TVs did but what about now? Some TVs do produce competitive black levels or colors but give it up in other categories...so a 2 year old TV is STILL the reference. I actually have a Pioneer plasma now and I love it, but it's old...even after all these years it has not degraded in picture quality but I would like to move up to a bigger screen with 1080p support.

Has anyone else managed to find a TV or am I stuck trying to find someone selling a Kuro for a not-unreasonable price if I want the best?

Why would a company like Panasonic spend money to design when they can just buy it? In the process, they just sell what they currently have and make money until the wait for it. Once Panasonic gets it, they will make Samsung work for their time in the spotlight. And LG...well....they are just LG. 10 years from now....it wont even matter as plasma probably wont be made any more.

AFAIK, the Kuro is still the king. I'll be keeping my Pioneer 5080 until I have a room that can utilize a fp.

Edit: If my TV croaked and I were looking at a new one, I'd be taking a hard look at the 73" Mitsubishi DLP. Obviously a different animal than the Kuro, but still an excellent picture with a size that can't be matched by an affordable flat-panel TV.

Check your local Best Buy Magnolia, they may have the Pioneer Elite 101FD for about $2000-$2500. It just a monitor (no tuner or speakers) and doesn't come with a stand, but BB may just throw in the stand for free. I actually prefer the monitor over the standard Elite because you don't have to wait for the tuner to start up to switch inputs. It's a little nit picky, but still, kind of irritating when I power on the TV and want to switch inputs immediately. Anyway, the 101FD is THE best of the best Kuros. So if you can snag one, I HIGHLY recommend it.

As to the reason why there hasn't been an HDTV that outperforms a 2008 Kuro? Well, the public has spoken, and they basically said they are happy with "good enough." So that is what you have on the market now.
