actuall i agree with cremator. when u got a freakin xp chip i think the benefits of OCing are marginal at best.

It's like tinkering with your car's engine--course this is from the days when you could see your engine and actually do physical stuff to it, instead of just changing chips in it's comp--you do it cause you can and it's fun. And in the process you get to crunch wu's faster, or manipulate data faster, OR have bragging rights ( like when you messed around with your car ).

Congrats on unlocking that XP, I was unable to unlock mine, just been too lazy to take it apart and try again Go for the gold, dude!

My opinion is this...

If you can overclock without having to spend additional cash on better heatsinks, thermal compound, fans, ducting etc etc then why not take advantage of the free speed?

What did you use to connect the L1 contacts?

Actually if you unlock the multiplyer, you can get a higher, more stable overclock since you don't have to adjust the fsb so high. Ie. Go with 133fsb and a higher mult and you can get a sweet spot.

If you had to choose between a 1.2GHz CPU and a 2.0GHz CPU for the same amount of money which one would you choose?

If you picked the 2GHz CPU then you understand why people overclock. If you picked the 1.2GHz one you are messed up in the head.

Is it me or is this and EXTREMELY NAIVE statement.

Your not getting the additional MHZ at no cost. your getting it at the cost of peace of mind because of the POSSIBILITY of burning out your CPU earlier.

also, there could possibly stability problems, ps problems, and a whole host of other problems.

I'm a oc'er myself, but you can't call people who choose not to OC "messed up in the head". that's ridiculous.

People that would choose the second option are messed up in the head, not those that don't overclock. What I meant was that those who understand how overclocking works and what the REAL risks are get the most out of their systems. Others don't.

Sorry but I don't think anybody wants an unstable system and that includes overclockers. When you overclock your CPU you stop just before your system becomes unstable. I never worry about frying my CPU because overclocking can't do that, raising the core voltage however is a different subject.

The reason i unlocked my xp 1700 is the same reason people climb mountains "because its there"

I was not able to overclock my 1700 cpu over 1800 even after unlocking. I was able to attain this speed by just plain fsb increasing and knew that I porbably wont get that much increase by unlocking yet I still did it. I think for the most part the actual increase that you can obtain from unlocking these xp cpu is minimal 100 to 200 mhz which you can get with just fsb overclocking. So if your in it for pure increase in mhz then its probably not worth to unlock. But if you like to tinker with stuff or like to lower your cpu speed due to noise or heat issues go on right ahead. Its not hard to do.

peace

How about this:

If you had to choose between a 1.2GHz processor that could OC to 2.0GHz without a problem, rock-stable, etc. etc. and a 2.0GHz that couldn't be overclocked, what would you choose?

If i have a mediocre cpu that doesn't yield much in terms of OC than i don't do it, sometimes i'll even underclock it. I'll OC if the cpu is "fast out of the box".
