I hope the trailer was just a proof of concept of where they want to go. I'm intrigued, but the visuals are too cartoony, too animated, to flat. They don't look good.
I actually like that rendering and lighting of theirs a lot.

This doesnt "feel" like Total Annihilation... sorry it just doesnt.

I get the feeling the reason is, they dont own the IP for the series and had to come up with some slightly differnt name / gameplay differnce (so they dont get sued). And the solution was to have planet jumping, and the battle being fought out on small 3D globes, instead of a flat plane like the orginal one was.

Good. Last I checked, someone already made Total Annihilation.

Nope. You essentially can't protect game IP beyond names and assets. They could put in exact same mechanics as TA has and not get sued.

They explicitly say there will be a range from large planets to asteroids. They also mentioned "12 hour, 40 player games" being a possibility. It's not going to be "small 3D globes" only. I wouldn't be surprised if they put in some flat maps where you can't launch into space. If not, there's modding.

Still looks interesting, not sure how a 40 man 12 hour battle would turn out without being able to save. Kick starters scare me, seems like it's real easy to get snookered. Look how Mech Warrior reboot has been delayed and changed. Its possible for this to turn out completely differently but who knows...

I'm in for $20. I sent a link to my Dad to invest as well... he must have spent two years straight playing that game every day.

I wouldn't be surprised to see his name in the credits when it ships

Edit: Scratch that, looks like there is AI for standard play. Money pledged.

Linux support too!

I'm really hesitant about this because it's Uber. There's a lot of good concepts here, but I can't help but feel some free to play model will be incorporated and I'm concerned with how "streamlined" it might end up.

Yeah it was good, lacked a lot of under the hood stuff though. It needed:

- DX11 for better multithreading, the games about 1000's of units fighting but it bogs down too easily

- 64 bit, for more than 4gb of ram

- Plus better multiplayer, gpg.net was balls

^ yup, even on a brand new top of the line system it will bog down on large/long games.

- They had a DX10.1 version with effects such as tidal waves, but couldn't implement it due to lack of time and funding

- The RAM might make a difference, but most of it is down to using LUA not C/C++, which made it extremely moddable, but otherwise much slower.

- gpgnet was balls, couldn't agree more

If you guys want to play SupCom: FA over the internet, look at Forged Alliance Forever. As far as I know, its a lobby type program that facilitates Internet play much better than GPGNet.

Having taken a brief look at the SC FA Lua file, I'm surprised at how much of the code is in Lua. I mean, yeah it makes it very flexible, I'm just surprised they did that much. I would expect stuff like AI and unit definitions to be in Lua, but they go much further than that. Even GUI stuff is in Lua.

Personally I liked SC2, but I can see why fans of SC didnt like it. It did change a lot. What I cant understand is why fans of TA dont like SC (well some of them dont).

I know what you mean but I figure i just will throw in a small amount and take the risk that it could be not as good as we hope, since I can easily spend more for a meal.
