Get some fruit. Throw some away in the trash. Wait a couple days. What happens?

It seems pretty much every time, there will be gnats flying around it.

There's a pretty unavoidable deduction from this.

There were gnat eggs/larvae in the fruit. Had you eaten it, you'd have eaten that. When you eat fruit, you are eating insect eggs/larvae. Disgusting.

And that's just one reason why I avoid that hippie organic food. I want my insect eggs thoroughly nuked by pesticides.

That's nasty, I never even considered that but it does make sense.

You can wash fruit, but it's not really going to do much to the stuff that's already embedded inside. Heck, even surface stuff, water is not going to do much to remove it.

I'm kinda guilty for not washing fruit. If I'm sitting at the computer and munching on grapes or whatever, I don't want it dripping water everywhere.

Stick to fried and processed foods and you're safer.

I guess the OP has never considered that these little flying creatures are in his home and are attracted to and laying eggs on the rotting food in his trash. He never saw a fruit fly?

First, no. It goes from seeing no gnats to seeing a lot AFTER the fruit is tossed.

Second, where did they come from? From fruit you brought home.

Op is just an endless cesspool of useless treasure topics the likes of "Where dun muh marriott points gun?" And god forbid you post an opinion he disagrees with, he will be sure to assert that hes putting you on ignore... as if were all shaking our fist at the screen in anger as if he won a battle or something and ultimately give a shit. I think he's ultimately looking for a forum of "Everyone agree with my opinions and stupid assertions"

That said, I have had tons of fruit sit and rot on my counter to the point where it starts to grow bacteria that gets stuck to the countertop. Mostly because I try to make a fruit salad bowl every week or so, but sometimes get tired of a fruit or forget about one. So plenty of times I've had to throw away old pieces of fruit before even washing them - and I never have gnats in the house... like ever.

If you eat grain products, I've got some bad news for you. Just because they've been processed beyond recognition, it doesn't mean they aren't there.

ha ha ha, no.

if there were larvae you would have seen them.

the gnats you see were already in your place and were attracted to the fruit.

Which means you're eating the supereggs of the insects strong enough to survive. When a giant cockroach gnaws its way out of your stomach you'll know why.

Easy test: take a glass and pour some vinegar in it, add like 2 drops of dish soap. Set it in same vicinity as your trash, leave it alone for a couple hours.

Did it collect any fruit flies? If so, the fruit flies could have come from someplace else and just congregated at the source of fruit breaking down.

Get with the times. Spontaneous generation is so last millenium, or was it two millenia ago?

The truth is that fruit flies (or Drosophila melanogaster, as they are scientifically named) are stealthy little guys that seem to smell rotting fruit from miles away. They do not come from the inside of the fruit, but rather come from outside once the fruit in your house starts to go just past ripe (as long as it’s out on your counter and not in the refrigerator, that is).

Maybe they're coming from the nearest Marriott?

It would probably make craig commit seppuku to find out all the nasty shit that's permitted under FDA regulations...maggots, rat hair, mold, insect parts, etc.

Not really. You eat things without looking closely, and gnats are very tiny - gnat eggs invisible.

Where did the gnats come from? They aren't here and unseen like that.

Well you can't do that test after you have them. You could have done it before.

No, Marriott's insects are in their headquarters in Utah.

Long story is... the world is full of !@#$. And you are what you eat... ergo, you are....
I'd rather do the human thing and shrug. Let me know if it's got a degree of danger associated with it.
