NSFP = NSF (Psyche or Pussies )

I was riding my bike and was about 12mi into my ride when I came across a turtle in bad shape. It had been hit by a car and was dry as a bone. It wasn't going to live but it was hanging on like a boss.

Thinking of the most humane way to take care of this I dumped a bunch of water in its face, rode home (2mi), picked up a plastic bag, some vinegar and baking soda.

I then gave it some more water, sat with it for a few min, then applied my euthanasia device. A nice lady stopped to see what I was doing and we both said our goodbys.

I rode back after 30mi and it was quite dead. Threw it in the woods for scavengers to take.

Poor guy.

I don't get exactly what you did with the bag and ingredients. Mix them together and put the turtle in it?

You drowned it with vinegar?
...because I think the main off gas from that reaction is carbon dioxide...

Vinegar + Baking soda usually causes a lot of foam doesn't it? I remember making those as a kid.

^ Initially but that can be controlled by some fiber (newspaper) and wick effect mixing.

poor turtle, I'm not sure a bag used like that is really effective though considering what is shown on the website Kelvrick linked.

Ehh. You're prob right. I figured with the injury and the what looked like many hours out on the edge of the road it would push it over the edge. Although the water prob pushed it in the wrong direction.

Don't tell anyone but I'm actually into turto erotis asphyxiation. Too bad it's most likely a female.

I wonder what the people driving past thought of all this. Some random guy taking photos of a mangled turtle and then shoving it in a bag and sitting with it.

Maybe not the way I'd have gone about it, but I applaud OP for the concern and initiative. I hate seeing animals suffer. Twice I've happened upon people standing there not exactly sure how to proceed with their future road kill. One of the reasons I keep a gun in the car. I had to cut a buck's throat once out of mercy. Nasty stuff, and quite honestly it haunted me for a long time. He did not go quietly into that good night, but I wasn't about to let an obese elderly man try to kill a 200lb buck with a big piece of dead maple.

A small caliber pistol makes those unfortunate occurrences a lot easier to deal with, for everyone. Especially in areas where rabies is an issue and you're dealing with a fox or some variety of canine.

I can't believe adults who have access to the internet don't hear vinegar, baking soda, plastic bag, and euthanasia and immediately know what's going on. Second grade science, people.

Good job, OP. What you did was not easy, and few people would have done it.

well, I see someone didn't learn anything from their 3rd grade Volcano project.

good on you, OP...though I'm surprised that type of CO2 reaction had much of an effect, especially on a reptile, which tend to prefer higher concentrations of CO2. My guess is that you at least put it into a nap which, with that amount of trauma, probably enough to finish it for good.

Drove past a cat with broken back legs last weekend. It was trying really hard to get out of the road, but... yeah.
