The most prominent critic of gamergate goes on a popular cable show with an audience of millions, the vast majority of whom have NEVER heard of this controversy before and will only learn of it through the lens of its most prominent critic, and the beloved presenter gets her to tell how she was threatened with the worst school shooting in history, plus discusses the controversy with language that invokes ideas of segregation (separate but equal gaming).... and proponents of gamergate are chalking this up as a win? The movement has been absolutely excoriated in the mainstream "non-gaming" media, such as the
New York Times, or
Time Magazine, or
Newsweek, and now the Colbert Report. But at least you've got the misogynists at ROK and the racists at Stormfront on your side. And you can argue the facts all you want; in the court of public perception (with people who largely don't care about video games in the slightest), the movement has been firmly established as anti-woman. That doesn't work to your benefit at any point. Because once you get branded a hate group, it becomes very easy for advertisers to dismiss your claims, regardless of their validity.
The funniest thing about all this is the sheer level of vitriol that Sarkeesian elicits in some people is the only reason she has a platform at all. Most of us can hear her claims and say, "No, I don't agree with that," and let it go (like
Andrew Sullivan does here). It's the people who have gone crazy every time she talks, with threats and borderline-psychopathic rage, that has gotten anyone to take the time to listen to her at all. In that regard, the misogynists who have aligned with gamergate (or trolls if you want to claim they don't represent you, even though everyone else in the media assumes they do and you aren't disavowing yourself of them) are only helping bolster the claims of Sarkeesian. If there are no threats against Sarkeesian (or other women), she never gets to go on the Colbert Report and tell the world exactly what's wrong with gamergate. Instead, yet another mainstream media outlet falls into the "these are just a bunch of misogynists" camp and your argument gets a little bit harder to defend in the court of public opinion.
