Yet Another Goodwill Score Thread (also, what did I just buy?)

I saw this fantastic device at Goodwill today for $20.00

No idea what I'm going to do with it, but it looks awesome and I know at least the optical sensor (Navi FX-300 series, if you can't see it in the pictures) is worth a little more than that $20

So it appears that it can move up and down the column, can rotate around its base, and the metal rod goes in and out. But beyond that, I have no idea what it is for.

I wish I were more handy with these sorts of things, it could make for a very fun project. If I can't part it out, I'll probably bring it to my college's physics lab and let some poor college student fiddle with it.

looks like it's supposed to inspect something on a assembly line and pluck/kick it off or something

though it's useless as is without the controlling equipment.

i bet you could make it into a 3d printer pretty easily. it already rotates and goes up and down, add a 3rd stepper to make it extend out from the central axis.

lol, I've never seen anything that spiffy-looking sitting on the shelves at Goodwill/Savers.

Google is telling me that it might be a brushless servo motor with an optical encoder, whatever that is (dropped out of an EE major D: ).

Much too complicated for something like that. No telling exactly what it is but it looks to be a "drop in" part for some sort of machinery. Also, looks to be "mass produced" since it has some sort of foam packing that it sits in as well as the very good looking black oxide finish. Either servo or stepper and a lead screw with cat-track for up/down positioning.

looks like it may pick up a part and transfer it to another position with the little metal bar that sticks out and retracts. those motors and ball screw are worth at least 10x what you paid. i bet that assy. is worth 100x what you paid to the person that ordered it.
