Really hollywood? another remake of the Thing? Wasnt the 1982 movie good enough? New plot twist, a female character. Oooh, big change.

The only version worth watching IMHO is the 1951 "Thing from Another World". John Carpenter, director of the 1982 version was just on TCM hosting a showing of the movie. He chose this version as one that really impacted his life/career, especially in film school.

Ok, for the OP and everyone else that bitches when Hollywood does what it has always done.....

This movie is for this generation, not the generation that was young in '82. A new generation of kids come up, and Hollywood makes movies for them using the hot current actors. It's the same for music.

I agree. I saw this version as a kid and it stuck with me ever since. It holds a permanent place in my DVD library. A second remake? Just more evidence that Hollywood has long since run out of ideas.

Originally, I was interested in the prequel idea, but after seeing the trailer I get the impression it is a shot for shot remake of the original.

1982 version is still one of the most gruesome movies to me. I cringe at the monsters.

I LOVE the John Carpenter version - I think it's one of the most unfairly overlooked films of my lifetime. It came out shortly after E.T. and I think people were really turned off by the idea of an alien-based horror film, so the reviews were not anything like what it deserved. I am OK with the idea of a prequel but it's a little hard to imagine much suspense since we know exactly how it ends - with the Norwegian guys in a helicopter, shooting at a dog.

They might as well do a remake because the Norwegian camp plays out in a similar manner to the American camp. The only thing that could potentially be a lot more interesting is the initial discovery of the alien. The 82 version is just fantastic, some of the creepiest special effects.
