Yet another upgrade question

One of the new 9800 GTX+ or ATI HD4850 than my current 8800GTS 640? I game on a 22" panel @ 1680x1050. Noticeable?

Well, it depends on the games you play. If the games score higher with 9800GTX, then that's your answer. Wait a bit for benchies.

As near as I can tell, most of these cards seem to be aimed at higher resolution than you use. Just to put things in perspective, though, the 8800GT runs a bit faster (~10%) than your 8800GTS 640MB so compare the benchies of the 8800GT to the newer cards to see how they stack up.

I would wait for the HD 4870, the 4850/9800GTX+ are not really a worthwhile upgrade from your 8800GTS 640 unless of course you are not at all satisfied with the performance on a specific game.

I am considering the same right now, running a 8800 GTS 640 on a 650i SLI. So I am waiting for the 4870...

Another question, do you think an E4300@3,1GHz should be enough for these new cards? So far I haven´t had a reason to upgrade my CPU and still don´t see the need.

EDIT: I game in 1600 x 1200 most of the time.

Well apparently (anandtech said so) The HD 4850/9800GTX are anywhere from 20-50% faster than the 8800GT, so that would be anywhere from 25-60% faster than your GTS.

As for the cpu power, look at the recommended sys. req. to determine if you have enough cpu power. I'd say yes for most games.

I knew the gpu war was going to start this month so I ebayed my 8800gt for nearly $200. That's enough for either card listed above.

Same boat here, I'm waiting to see what the 4870 offers, even tho that Best Buy deal has me salivating. You should at least see what the 4870 offers before jumping on the 4850. For my tastes, the 4850 runs a bit too hot. Even waiting to buy a 4850 with a better cooling setup is an option, as 80c is not good (seems like AMD's thermal compound application is suspect in a lot of cases).

And I can still change to an E8xxx if the need arises. I guess changing the board to an X38/48 just for quadcore and crossfire support isn´t necessary right now.

I think I´ll wait and then switch to a single 4870. Thermals are the same reason I didn´t switch to a 8800GT (I had the possibility to switch without any costs when G92 arrived on the market). The G80 GTS runs at 50°C in idle and at about 70°C fully stressed...
