I ended up replacing my 2 EA500's with Corsair power supplies. I found a statement from one of their employees in an on-line forum (don't remember which one) that their PS's with active PFC work with stepped sine wave UPS's. I don't have a large sample size, but I've tested the 2 I bought and they do work. I was able to buy the 2 Corsair power supplies for much less than a single true sine wave UPS. I ended up with one each 400CX and 550VX.

That's good to hear, thanks. I might just have to switch out my PSUs for Corsair too, then.

Test yours first. I do have one EA500 that works fine with a stepped sine wave UPS.

Update - the 2 of mine that don't work with stepped sine wave UPS's are EA500D, which I believe are newer ones made by Delta. The 1 that does work is an older EA500 (without the D) that I believe was made by Seasonic.

Well, the second of these Ativa UPSes just failed on me. Same way the first one went, about 6-8 months later, I think. (Maybe a year later?)

Working just fine, with minimal load on the UPS. Suddenly, devices plugged in lose power, and the red "overload" LED lights up. Turning the UPS off using the power button, a few seconds to a minute later, it turns itself back on! With the overload led, and a high-pitched whine.

Even unplugging everything from the UPS, and turning it off. Well, it turns itself back on, and gives off the high-pitched whine.

How or why these units turn themselves back on, into an overload condition, with no load on them, is a mystery to me.

I never got a replacement battery for the first one that went, because I surmised that the falure, was not the battery, but something else about the unit.

But now I'm not so sure.

Seems like I'm not the only one though:

Edit: My two failed units are also Ativa 516-015. Made in India (Bangalore) 1200VA 720W
Made by APC for Ativa / Office Depot
