Usually the bargain DVD bins yield nothing worth buying, but while in Walmart yesterday I found the New Line Platinum Series Dark City DVD for $5.50. This is a highly underrated film by Alex Proyas, who directed The Crow. Check out the IMDB info on it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/

It's a good film, and definitely worth $5.50 so next time you're in Walmart check the bin to see if you can find it in there

This was Roger Ebert's top film of 1998. I wouldn't rate it quite that highly, but it is still one of the best sci-fi films of the past few years. Always lovely to see Jennifer Connelly! (Who I've had a crush on dating back to Labyrinth and Creepers.) Great set design, too.

I copy DVD's like a fiend, but I'll have to buy this one. Thanks.

lots of people who likes this movie are fanatic about it. my roommate's one of them, maybe if i find this as a present for him he'll forget the 150 dollars i owe him.

Damn, I didn't dig far enough to find that. I may need to go back to the bin and grab that. Definately not a movie to run out and buy but one I would like to have to watch once in a while. Freaky movie.

Of course the GF would have bitched at me for buying it since she already bitched at me for picking up Ghostbusters for 9 bucks....

Dark City DVD for $5.50.

This is the movie from which the Matrix guys "borrowed" their dreamscape background and chosen-one-with-superpowers plot. In fact, the movies were so close that the beginning of The Matrix, where Trinity is running across gothic roofscapes, is actually shot on old sets from Dark City, which had finished production. Dark City has one of the shortest ASLs (average shot lengths) of any movie - each scene is on average only 1.8 seconds long!

And as for The Matrix's bullet time and the gunfight in the lobby, they "borrowed" all that from Blade. Of course, they in turn ripped off Michael Gondry for the bullet time effect, so it all evens out.

I had picked up Dark City at WM some time back. There bargain bin has actually had some good titles at times dating back to Thanksgiving 2002. If you liked Dark City check out The Thirteenth Floor, a very interesting film that received very little in the way of publicity, and was supposedly also pre-Matrix.

I'm curious if the scene of Jennifer Connelly standing at end of the boardwalk scene and looking out at the ocean in Requeim for a Dream is supposed to be a tip of the hat to Dark City? The director of "Dream" doesn't mention anything about it in the DVD commentary, but that scene seems too close to the ending of Dark City for it to be a coincidence. She's in almost the same pose in both movies.

I've never seen this flick, but the reviews on RT are good and for $5.50, I'll swing by Walmart and check it out...

I picked a copy up a few weeks ago. The selection usually depends on the particular store, but I've seen a complete list of all the bargain-bin titles and there's some other good DVD's to be found. Suicide Kings is usually always in there and definitely worth picking up as well.

We repeatedly see Jennifer Connelly's character standing at the end of a pier as Jared Leto's character walks toward her; this closely resembles a shot in the final scene of Dark City (1998) with Connelly and Rufus Sewell. According to director, Darren Aronofsky, this was a pure coincidence; when he came up with the image, based on a moment in his own life, he had yet not cast Connelly, nor even seen Dark City.

$5.50 for Dark City is a great price. it's great to watch it with Roger Ebert's commentary track first, then watch the movie again in regular mode.

Suicide Kings is a cool movie too.

already have both these titles, but may pick them up for my brother as gifts.

I watched this DVD and like it very much and a few months ago BestBuy offered it for free with the purchase of The Lord of the Ring 2. I don't like LOTR so didn't go for it. I will pick it up at WM this time.

There were none left at either of my local Walmart stores. Wonder if it's a regional thing?

What's available in the $5.50 DVD section at Wal Mart varies greatly over time and even from store to store. There is a thread over at DVDTalk.com that lists many of the titles that have been available, as well as what has been added recently.

I thought the LOTR were nothing special. Orlando Bloom can go suck on a lemon, he sucks. Other than that, it didn't use any new technology, and did not do anything new. If ROTK wins an Oscar, I will have lost all faith in the academy. I very much enjoyed the books though, just not the movies.

And I don't really like PB and J either.

Didn't use any new technology? What about MASSIVE, the s/w they used to run all the large battle scenes?
