Used to have a Tandy 1000....this thing is phat compared to that....8086 compatible that was, with TWO 5.25 floppy drives.

those were the days you could run a word-processor or spreadsheet in 2MB

today you'd be hard pressed to write a windows app that draws an empty box within that much memory

Bump!

Thanks for the blast from the past... I vaguely remember these too... we had cad stations in school running on some 286's/386's.

Hard to believe, only 15 yrs later, and we're running at 160x and greater!!

The Tandy 5000 was one of the very few computers outside of the IBM PS/2 that used Micro Channel (MCA).

Other interesting x86 Tandys included the Tandy 2000 which sported the 80186, rarely used in anything else.

I once had a Tandy 1000SX, with a 7MHz 8088 and the beloved Tandy graphics and sound (more or less ripped from the PCjr). I wish I didn't throw it out last year.

Too bad Radio Shack sells Compaq now.

back then, you could do that in much less. Many x86 had under 640k.

You're right... I was thinking 2KB. These huge 2MB servers were only for big business.

Another good "machine" was the Tandy CoCo (color computer) -- I don't remember any technical stuff about it, except that it was fun.
I had an Apple II+ with a whopping 64k -- which was more than enough for all the arcade games.

After that, I had a 286 w/640k... running a unix-like OS called Coherent. I'm not sure if Linux had even been dreamt of yet.
Well... most of the time it was running DOS 3.3. I tossed that out about two years ago.

It will be interesting how people 10 years from now will be shaking their heads at our "high-tech" stuff

Yeah...The CoCo (TRS-80), Rainbow magazine, and playing Zaxxon off of a cassette recorder..>The good ole days

The Tandy 1000TX (still have it, upgraded with a math coprocessor!), had to love that with the 360K 5 1/4 floppy and the massive 32 MB hard CARD (plugged into ISA slot)....$400 CGA COLOR monitor!!! WHoooHoooo......Yeah man, I so miss working off of that system!!!

Hey, this machine isn't bad for 89...
It looks like it could actually run Wolf3d quite well.
And don't forget the sequel to wolf3d also, spear of destiny.
EDIT:
Microsoft made something called OS/2 also?!?

The ad shows MS OS/2, is that just a nickname for windows or something?
Nevermind, figured out that this is just OS/2 back when both MS and IBM were co-opting on it.

MS developed OS/2 for IBM when they were still "married" OS/2 was first GUI based OS for x86 platform. When MS decided to go om their own, they signed all the licensing rights over to IBM and also agreed that MS's latter Operating Systems will be backwards compatiblle with OS/2's HPFS file system for the next four major releases. That agreement was fullfilled by MS and the last OS to support HPFS was Win NT 4.0

"Monitor and mouse not included."

That breaks the deal.

Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until next time around maybe.

There's a $100 of $8,500 coupon out there. Can't post the code here but makes this deal even hotter. All you need is a filler item like a box of single density floppy disks and you're all set.

I bet Dell would have to sell 100 of their $349 pcs to make the margins that Tandy/Radio Shack made off of that monster.

Very cool, gotta like these systems. Makes me feel better about the EISA 486 I bought in 91 for $5500, and the Pentium Pro I bought in 95 for $3600 with monitor, with SCSI hardrives, etc.

I still have a CoCo 2 (64k) and CoCo 3 (512k). I kept all my things Color Computer related. Still have several years subscription to Rainbow Magazine sitting in boxes. I used to type in a lot of the programs from that Rainbow Magazine. That took a lot of time, but I learned a lot about programming.

Pentium Pro in 95, you hafta be kidding!!! Those did not come out til 97 at least. 95 was early pre-MMX Pentiums only (90MHz, 100MHz, 120MHz, etc.)

I used to have a tandy 2500?? I think that was the model number. IT had a 20mhz 386 cpu. Upgraded it to 1MB of memory. Upgraded it to 4MB. It had a 85MB hd. 16 colors(not even 256) video. A 14"? or 15"? .39 dot pitch monitor. Also had a 2400bps modem. I upgraded it to a 28.8 a few years later. Had Win3.1. I forgot about the other stuff. But that was my first comp. MY grandfather gave it to me.

I also had a Tandy 1000 TX. Had the double sided HD 5.25 Floppy ($100) and no HD. Yep, I used to switch out 12 floppies just to play the old sierra games (remember space quest?) EGA graphics were a great improvement over CGA......
