It was open... I've read that unrefrigerated yogurt can still be good for many days because of its makeup... but what if the lid was open and left at room temp for 4 hours? I would normally not think twice and toss it but this is happening more frequently with my kids' breakfast and me not cleaning it up right away.

It's fine, but I'd eat it now, or if you want it chilled, after being in the fridge for an day or two. Yogurt's already 'bad' milk, but I wouldn't keep it long term cause it might have picked up some other cultures from your air.

If it smells OK, tastes good, I wouldn't sweat it. I have bought a lot of outdated Y, kept it in the fridge a long time, my nose and tongue have not failed me. Bacterial cultures/strains can fight for dominance in a medium, but in this case the yogurt bacteria have already dominated the culture, they don't take kindly to other organisms. But if it smells or tastes off, toss it.

Edit: 4 hours is not a long time.

If its a large container, that's repeatedly left out 4 hours it becomes an issue. Serving size not so much. Basically sealed vs not and repeated warming. Yogurt is pretty resistant to going bad for dairy.

I can't believe how pansy-ish people are about food. I've eaten pizza and burritos that have been left out for four DAYS. I'm still alive.

I'd be more concerned about the burrito. The pizza went through a likely 450F+ trial by fire, so there was nothing alive in it to begin with. Plus, after being baked at high heat, the moisture content was brought down considerably, making bacterial (or fungal) infection more difficult. The burrito? I'd give it a good smell before biting into it.

Many times I've eaten stuff out of my fridge that tasted off, obviously was going bad but not bad enough to stop me. I don't remember getting sick.

I understand being more concerned if it's your kids eating it than you. As a kid, I had a lot more issues with sickness and injury than an adult, partly because I was smarter about a lot of stuff. Understandably you are going to be more cautious about your kids' health than your own, you feel deeply responsible and dedicated.

It's a good thing we already have our own badass bacteria to kill off shit we mistakenly consume.

You've got this backwards. Use your kids as food-tasters. You can always make more of them.

When we lived in caves, we frequently ate the rotting decaying flesh of dead animals.
Hm Hm good.

4 hours I would probably eat it. Overnight? Probably not. I mean, it's probably safe, but why take a chance that it 1: ends up tasting super bad or 2: you get sick from it.

The distributor probably left it out unrefrigerated for 2 days, before it even hit the supermarket shelf.

Yogurt is always bad. The good news is that it pretty much is the most awful thing, so, it can't possibly get any worse. If you want to make everybody sick around you, go ahead and open that foul smelling thing. Seriously, I don't know how anybody can stomache that stuff, the smell is just so intense and so horrible.

Learn to make your own yogurt. You can make it so cheaply that if there were any doubt you'd just throw it away. You got plenty more. I make mine 2 gallons at a time.

Yogurt I don't mind, but I have some coworkers that always go on these weird health kicks, there's this new thing they've been drinking called cafiere, I might be spelling it wrong, never actually saw how you spell it. I forget exactly what is in it, but it's basically fermented milk and has way more probiotics than yogurt. It looks awful. "you should try it!" Uhhh no thanks.

Kefir. It's good. If you like yogurt, you should like that.
