You're taking your bosses words way too literally...very naive on your part.

A boss can ask his employees to jump hoops to motivate them, but internally he knows that they if they meet half of the requirement goals he'll be pleased.

Remember that unrealistic goals start at the top level of mgmt. and roll their way down hill to lower level mgrs. These goals are usually impossible, but its the "job" of every manager to pay lip service with employees to squeeze out some "better" performance than last year.

As long as you do the work and show your "8 hr. face", you're golden. Take the talk with a grain of salt.

Work = Politics............Learn to manage expectations.

And if you are truly being overworked all of a sudden, then its time to look elsewhere. Play it by ear. However, 90% of the time manager goal-talk is just.....talk/politics.

I worked 80 hours a week at my last job.

I handed in my two week's notice the day after I received my bonus check.

I am a salaried employee and I feel very strongly that I'm being pretty much taken advantaged of, as well as not being given due credit for the amount of work I do.

The thing that really drove this home was being in a meeting recently where our Manager told us that salaried employees are expected to work 10 hours per workday (so basically we're all expected to work 50hr work weeks as the norm)...So basically I'm exepcted to give 10 extra hours of work a week for free (being on salary)

I could even learn to live with these expectations, except they DON'T compensate (monetarily) for it.

Im guessing your not in a union work inviroment and because so you have no choice but to grin and bear it. You are underagreement that you would take the position and get paid a few bucks more for being salaried on the off chance you may have to work a few hours over 8. Now management is most likly fishing and making it mandatory to get free work from its employees and if some of you quit they can rehire someone else at less pay. Either way its a win win for the company but sucks for you since you dont work at a union employer because you dont have any rights your salaried. Just be happy they are not asking for 12 hour shifts
I've put in a LONNNNNG time with the company and in that time I've made a lot of work friends and connections...I don't want to just quit (and to me that means they win too).

At this point I think I should consult someone as to what my rights are, but who? Are there labor lawyers or labor consultants or anything like that?

Thanks.

Find another job. They can't make you work more than 40 hours. Maybe speak to an attorney.

Heck there may even be a company policy stating what the hours are. At my previous place you were salaried and expected to work 7.5 hours a day for a total of 37.5 hours per week.

There's this thing called life and employees want to start living it.

Start here to locate a lawyer for consultation.

but another way of looking at it is,

hourly- they are paying you for your time and for you to do your job in that time

salary- they are paying you to get the job done period

i completely agree with spidey though, it will be hell on earth when everyone in the nation is a slave to the corperation living only to go to work and then go to sleep a night

that is exceptible, your being payed to get the job done, and you are also able to compensate

but a manditory 50 hours every week is crap if your getting payed the same as you would working 40

Is somebody with a gun forcing you to show up at a particular place of employment everyday? Do you not realize in this country you are free to start whatever kind of business you want, and run it any way you see fit (within the law). Are you one of those world-owes-me-a-living, Democrat/Socialist/Communists who want the government/state to dictate how businesses are run, and what benefits are mandated?

I only read the first page of this thread, but I though I might contribute something from my limited work experience. I'm a senior in college studying electrical engineering. Last summer I did an internship for Lockheed Martin, and they are a company that is actually concerned with work/life balance for employees, which I found quite encouraging. They have a schedule that employees can opt for called 9/80.

This is how it works is a nutshell: over a 10-day work period (5 days a week times two) you work 9 days. For M-F the first week, you work 9 hours M-Th, and then 8 hours on Friday. The same goes for the next week, but you have Friday off instead. You end up working a little more most days, but get a day off every two weeks, which most of the employees really valued. There were some employees that still worked 5 AM - 7:30 PM but hey that's their choice. In fact, the managers were rather concerned that they worked such long hours, and talked to them about it.

Anyway, hope this insight helps!
