I tried a Samsung DLP and I took it back within 12 hours. It looked like complete garbage. I was not about to change all my furniture to correct a horrible uneven screen brightness. If you aren't dead level with the perfect height the top will look brighter or darker than the bottom half and anyone sitting off to the side will be screwed. Make sure if you try a dlp you buy from someplace you can take it back.

I just bought a Samsung LN52A750 from Amazon and it is a beautiful screen. I went from a 42" Panasonic plasma to this and I am amazed at the quality of the LCD. I have always hated the blocky pixelation on LCD screens compared to plasma but this Samsung looks incredible.

for those of you praising the Samsung LED DLP. does the LED part mean that these dont use a lamp that you need to replace like most projection televisions? ive heard from people who have projection tv's that the bulbs need replacement fairly often and are very pricey. (enough cost to warrant spending more on an lcd and not worrying about it)

That is exactly what it is, LED Backlighting

For an 'upgrade' I'd be looking at the A950 (LED backlighting) or go the Plasma route (Viera THX model; pre-calibrated).
Don't jump on the 120hz bandwagon without viewing one extensively first; love or hate.

Correct, the LED lasts the life of the set.

Saw a Pio Elite 110fd on clearance at BB for $1899. Granted, it's an 8g model and there were small scratches on the upper right screen (what kind of fucking monkey- retard employee or customer- allows this to happen?). Still, it outputted a picture only bested by their 9g models and the Samsung 950. Too bad bout those scratches...idiot BB monkeys.

So...what is the deal with IR and Plasma? Do the remotes not work? I have a harmony 880...?

Why do people who make the argument for DLP's always ignore the fact that they have absolute shit viewing angles and dismiss anyone who brings it up. I really want to like DLP's, and hoped that eventually the LED ones might someday have the viewing angles to make them nice, but it is simply a dealbreaker for me. Unless your couch sits in line with the middle of the TV DLP's simply don't look very good. Yes in the sweet spot they are a great bang for the buck, but in a living/family room having an optimal setup is tough for lots of people.

damn right. DLPs are piss-poor bleak. You can use the pictures they render to
medically explain what tunnel vision looks like.

Any of the Sammies, Sony XBRs, Sony Bravias, certain Pannie plasmas all kill that
crap DLP technology - at the price point mentioned.

I am on an LCD now, but am thinking a Plasma would be better. I want darker blacks, no bleeding and not motion blur...no pixelation. I do have bluray, ps3 and HD content on Comcast.

I think Plasma may be the way to go... but which one...?

JC

Panasonic Viera 1080p 480hz 46" $999 at BestBuy right now(if you can find stock). 50" is like $1700

The 480hz is not a gimmick, it really is better than a 120hz LCD. My grandmother just bought the 50" to replace an old 32" CRT and I hooked my PS3 up to it playing some games and trying Blu-Ray. It's better than my 1080i tube CRT or my Uncle's 1080p LCD.

My next TV will be a Plasma and will be a Panasonic.

I agree. 120hz helps, but a good plasma, especially newer ones with 480hz just look so much better. There's no reason to get LCD anymore since the new sets from Pioneer and panasonic have pretty much eliminated Glare with the coatings and IR with new tech.

I was amazed at how good the Plasma handles Gaming and leaving the PS3 menu up without IR on the screen.

IR = Image retention and is basically when a still picture like the CNN or ESPN logo burns into the screen and creates a ghost image you can see between channels or when the screen goes dark for a commercial. Older sets had severe issues with this and most gamers would not use a plasma for fear of getting IR. New sets especially from panasonic and Pioneer do not have issues with IR.

To be fair, on old sets IR usually wasn't perminant and would go away after normal usage. Our old LG plasma does it, granted it's not a high end unit. That being said, it hasn't caused any damage to the screen.

Samsung LED DLP, the biggest you can buy.

3rd. Spend another 100 and get the 67" like me from Amazon!

4th'd! My brother has a 51" Samsung LED DLP (refurb from Amazon) and it's amazing, especially for the money. I checked out the 61" and 67" locally and they did not seem as good, but then again they weren't tweaked or anything and it was on a store shelf, not sitting on a couch at a proper viewing distance and angle. DLPs do have the viewing angle drawback, but if you set it up properly, it's not a big deal. Make it at or above eye level and it's just fine!

At 12 feet you really better be looking at a 60"+ display. DLP is the only choice in your price range. Or up your price range.

Just here to say image retention <>burn-in. Plasma will still burn in if you leave a static image on it for too long. The phosphors are actually consumed. This has not changed from the CRT times.

LCDs have a similar phenomena where pixels are just stuck because it has been displaying the same thing for a long time. Occurrence however, is lower than plasma phosphor burn-in.

I was in your shoes pre-xmas. I bought a 52" Samsung with the non-glossy screen (LN52A630) for $1799 shipped no tax from buydig.com. It is currently $1749 shipped from Amazon.com

I almost fell for the DLP line...until I shopped them. I could not stand the ever so slightly off-axis viewing plunge. I'm talking on the couch, but one cushion over....looked like night and day.

52" Sammy $1749

I was going to recommend the exact same thing. I bought the 46" with the 'glossier' screen for christmas and the picture is insane. I wish I had more money for the 52", but I couldn't wait to save $400.

depending on size i would either suggest a sony lcd a W or z class lcd one of there higher end class or if you want a large display the led dlp or rptv. I personally own a sony kds55A3000 and i believe it to be the best hdtv ever made
i would stay away from plasma because that is the technology that is most likely to break.
