i would stay away from plasma because that is the technology that is most likely to break.
What a bunch of BS. I would say dlp or lcd RPTV are as they "break" every time your lamp goes poof.

Dim the lights and get a projector! I picked up the Epson 6100 for $1599, put $10 worth of blackout cloth from Joann's on the wall, and instantly upgraded from a 32" TV to a 100" movie screen.

Don't jump on the 120hz bandwagon without viewing one extensively first; love or hate.

I agree. 120hz helps, but a good plasma, especially newer ones with 480hz just look so much better. There's no reason to get LCD anymore since the new sets from Pioneer and panasonic have pretty much eliminated Glare with the coatings and IR with new tech.

I was amazed at how good the Plasma handles Gaming and leaving the PS3 menu up without IR on the screen.

IR = Image retention and is basically when a still picture like the CNN or ESPN logo burns into the screen and creates a ghost image you can see between channels or when the screen goes dark for a commercial. Older sets had severe issues with this and most gamers would not use a plasma for fear of getting IR. New sets especially from panasonic and Pioneer do not have issues with IR.
To be fair, on old sets IR usually wasn't perminant and would go away after normal usage. Our old LG plasma does it, granted it's not a high end unit. That being said, it hasn't caused any damage to the screen.

Then...why will no manufacturer warranty against IR?

I'm a first time projector owner, with a Epson 6100. I set it up last night projecting a 100" screen. All I can say is.....wow.

until you get a burnt image, I wouldn't worry about it. Normal use of a high-quality plasma should'nt be a prob
It may take a few min to fade away but it will.

Because some idiots WILL abuse that. Can plasmas get burn in? Sure, but its not likely.

Actually baked, I have held off a bit. I am going to look at the new V10 Panny. I may also see if I can squeeze into one of those Pioneer Plasma 50 inch deals I have had my eye on. Its tough to let go of that kind of cash.

I just received my Samsung 46LNB750 and am very very happy with it. I got a deal on it for $1622, if you wait a bit though you might be able to get it cheaper when Sears has their next Samsung event, if they have another one.

Do it! What are you afraid of? The economy going south? Do it!

I bought this last year - still amazed at the PQ.

There's a 54" Panasonic G10 on Amazon right now for $1630, shipped. Go read some reviews on the G10, it's got a great picture for the price. Also, a 54" screen is a huge jump from your 40".

Suckers with your sub-10' screens.

Once you go FP, you wonder why the heck anyone would spend the same amount of money for 1/4 the screen size.

Most people don't have a room with good enough light control to really take advantage of an FP, or they don't want to bother with all of the other things that come along with FP like getting a proper screen.

FP is best in a dedicated room. I also wouldn't want to waste precious bulb life on anything but movies. Plasmas are good for 60,000-100,000 hrs before half brightness. Projector bulbs are normally good for 2000-2500 hrs. Big difference. So I'd rather use an LCD/Plasma for everyday use.

Also bigger is not always better. I'm more concerned with the type of projector rather how big the projected image is. Not to mention the type of screen. Quality over quantity for me.

I use my proj for everyday use. Modern projectors and screens are plenty bright, even with the lights on. Now if by every day use you mean you leave it on in the background 24/7 then yeah that might not be a good use. But for 16 hours of use per week, a proj lamp will last 2.5 years, and a replacement bulb cost $300.

As for quality, my current 1080p projector is miles and miles ahead of the quality of the plasma I had which it replaced. Color accuracy, sharpness, detail, pretty much every category except contrast is vastly improved. And it was half the price the plasma was when I got it in 2005. So, half the price, 4x the size, much better image quality = woot.

Oh and my proj is not in a dedicated room, its in my living room with a pull-down screen neatly covering a windowed wall. All I needed for light control was regular curtains. No dedicated concrete bunker basement required!

I bought my plasma in November of last year and have already racked up almost 2000 hrs on it. With a projector, I'd be coming close to the end of that bulb life. And no, I don't leave it on 24/7.

As for quality, my current 1080p projector is miles and miles ahead of the quality of the plasma I had which it replaced. Key words there is, the plasma YOU had. I wouldn't speak for all plasmas or LCDs. The only thing your projector has over the best LCDs and plasmas is size. That's about it. So what you are doing is compromising quality for size. I don't like that compromise but to each his own. Again it's quality over quantity for me. Now if you say you have a VPL-VW200 or a SIM2, NOW we're talking.

Oh and my proj is not in a dedicated room, its in my living room with a pull-down screen neatly covering a windowed wall. All I needed for light control was regular curtains. No dedicated concrete bunker basement required!

No one said you HAD to use it in a dedicated room, just that it's usually best in a dedicated room. I've seen people pull it off nicely in their living room, but it has to be very tastefully done.

That is what I spent on my Samsung 46-inch LCD TV last summer. You should be able to get a decent 52 inch for around that price which would be sweet. Its true, whatever you get, begger seems like it would be still nicer. 46-inches was a big upgrade from my 27-inch CRT TV and I still enjoy watching it very much from about 8 feet away. I wouldn't want anything smaller for sure. By the same token, 52-inches would be nice for movie watching.

I have to say, moving from a 27-inch CRT TV to a 16:9 format 46 inch LCD has transformed watching movies at home and made the experience much more cinimatic. Naturally bigger is even more so. Maybe some day I can upgrade to a 60 inch when they drop in price in a few years and the 46-inch may be the bedroom TV

Barco 808 probably.

I've been researching what to buy for my home theater in my basement. I'm working at a much slower pace than Anand worked, and my budget is kinda low .... After I finish the wiring, finish the drywall, finish the ceiling, put in dricore, build a second row lift, get carpeting ... I'll be picking up a projector to replace my old 61 inch rear projection 480i TV. I've been looking at sub 1K projectors, and pretty much all the LCD projectors will give me a bright screen that looks washed out but clear, or I can pick up a used CRT behemoth which can usually handle 1080P or better, won't show any pixelization , will run for many thousands of hours on the same bulb, will have MUCH better black levels ....

Anyhow ... I think I'll be saving a bit more cash and picking up a barco 808 graphics .... I don't believe you can get anything better than it for $1700.

Are the Mitsubishi 65" Lasers any good? I saw one at a friend's house, and it looked incredible, but it was also in very good conditions (minimal lighting, 6' centered viewing angle, etc).
