A 12-year-old visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts stuck a wad of gum to a $1.5 million painting, leaving a stain the size of a quarter, officials say.
The boy was part of a school group from Holly that visited the museum on Friday, officials say. They say he took a piece of Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice gum out of his mouth and stuck it on Helen Frankenthaler's "The Bay," an abstract painting from 1963.
The museum acquired the work in 1965 and says it is worth about $1.5 million.

Now, I don't think its right, but I can understand a 12 year old making that kind of error in judgement.
However, when a 56 year old makes that kind of poor judgement........he gets re-elected?

Ummm... You have enough responsibility and judgement to carry a gun in the woods at age 12, but can't decide if its a good idea or not to stick gum on a museum painting?! My parents woulda kicked my ass so hard if i would have did that. That kid should be barred from going on any future trips, I totally think that is a reasonable idea. When I was 12, I never would have even thought of doing such an act for fear of the extreme consequences that would have for sure come up.

Sad thread. Actually it is very lame that you had to bring Bush into this, once again.

Somehow, someone here will find a way to blame Bush for this.

what I would really like to know is...

why wasn't the painting behind some kind of cover for protection?

I work for the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and I know, for a fact, that if you're caught with gum in ANY of them you must spit it out immediately or you're escorted from the building. The only place that isn't as severe is the Science Center, but that's because it's more hands on. Still, strict no gum policy anywhere.

And this is why all kids must be taught to look at the concequences of their actions... I'd force the kid to pay every cent back (probably won't amount to even close to $1.5 million, as they said the museum people can clean it), even if he is only 12. Twelve is old enough to do physical labor (I think it's 13 actually, but meh) and you better bet that the kid will put every penny he earns toward this.

Maybe he can tell his friends too.

Most paintings aren't in Art Museums.

What I don't understand is... why?

Something considered extremely valuable, yet left out in the open? that's just ASKING for it to be destroyed or damaged in some way.

Loses the appreciation when it's put inside a case? I don't know, to be honest... What I do know is that there is a level of maturity that is expected from the visitors, however.

Maturity is expected, but accidents do happen.
there are subtle ways to protect something like a painting without resorting to a glass case (sorry if I implied that that was the only way). Even a very thin, translucent plastic flim inserted between the frame and the painting itself would've prevented this.

I dunno, I guess to me, this is a case of 'better safe than sorry'

To all those who think this is the kind of a mistake that a 12-year old can make - shame on you. You have to be seriously retarded, or very misguided to do something like that at the age of 12. Eight, maybe... but not twelve.

What does Bush have to do with this, AT ALL? Can't you read an article without somehow bringing Bush into it? Very sad...

You would have to be retarded not to understand the inferrence of "56 yr old" "poor judgement" "re-elected" in the context of any 'techs' post and it being unmistakingly attributed to Bush.

Well, for one thing, texture is obscured when one looks at a work behind glass. Also, even with the best anti-reflective glass, there's some reflection. In short, it's always better for the viewer if a work of art can be viewed with nothing in between.

Also, the fact that this sort of mischief doesn't happen very often is an indication that the risk is pretty low. That said, extremely fragile and/or valuable works are typically displayed behind glass.

What a shame they ruined it. The Museum of Modern are in the capital of this sector of galactic arm would have paid 2 million for it with the gum.

Wow, I can't believe that painting is worth 1.5 million

As far as the boy, you would think he would have known better, it was a museum after all, sounds like he got off easy.
