I posted this some years ago in another thread. I feel like it needs repeating now more than ever since gun owners are once again under attack by morons.
I can tell you right now this post will be picked apart and reposted in sections in order to attack statements out of context, in fact I almost guarantee it. I know how anti-gun trolls like to stereotype gun owners so let me dispense with that bullshit right off the bat.
I'm an atheist. I believe in limited government, I believe in social freedom, I believe you can marry anyone you want, pray to any god you want, I believe in your right to say what you want and disagree with me, I believe in your right to do what you want with your property under the law. I believe in your right to live your life as you see fit to whatever end you choose under the law. I believe in my right to poke holes in you should you try to harm me, my family, steel or rob from me or take away my freedom in any way.
I am a gun owner. I will always be a gun owner. As was stated by another person in this thread, a gun is a symbol of my ability to be responsible for myself, my family and my property. A gun is also a tool to ensure and enforce those ideals against those who would try to take them from me. Guns are part of my national heritage as well as my family heritage. I do not apologize for this and am not ashamed by it. I will not be shamed into hiding my ideals by those who wish to control me or who are ignorant (most anti-gun trolls).
I understand other countries restrict the freedom of their peasants and do not allow for personal defense against tyranny and evil. I do not care that peasants from these countries disapprove of US gun ownership. The US is a leader, not a follower. That may offend some, but I won't sacrifice my values for your feelings. I am a citizen, not a peasant. I live in a country made up of citizens, not peasants.
I don't hunt or engage in sport shooting. Some people do and I think that's wonderful but it isn't for me. The guns I do own have a singular purpose and that is to stop bad men from doing bad things. I have trained with my guns to a level of proficiency which I believe will aid me in their use. I am not a gun nut, I am simply skilled in their use as you can become skilled in any pursuit.
I hope and wish with all my being I never point a gun at a living person. It is my sincere wish that none of my guns would ever need to be used to protect my life, my family, my property or my nation. Anyone who does wish for those thing has severe problems and probably shouldn't own guns.
I am not a "tough" guy, I would categorize myself as an average Joe. I wear a button up shirt and slacks to work at my office job. I'm friendly and enjoy the company of others, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I help others whenever I can. I know many, many gun owners and all of them are like me in these regards. It is the goal of anti-gunners to paint us as extremist, radicals or as uneducated rednecks. They would have have it known that we are anti-social, paranoid, scared and mistrusting of others and that we are simply waiting for our chance to shoot up anyone who crosses our path. These are lies. Some of these lies are in this thread.
At the end of the day, most gun owners are like me to a degree. We're all different in some regard but we're all the same in others. I'm proud to be a gun owner and I like knowing that there are others out there, other gun owners, like me.
