It had to be latched because the rolling forces would have ripped it open/off even if he was holding it closed. I have always thought about this if I hear the warning on the TV. I would high tail it to the swear hole and hope that I have enough Potassium iodide. I'm kind of a prepper so I have gas masks and shit.

I use to go down in man holes when I was young. They are basically a long cylindrical hole with a small gutter at the bottom. Unless you live in NY.

I think he was using a door shelf to hold it closed, and somehow the fall damaged the latch, so the door opened....but Indy somehow wasn't too damaged from the fall.
